I will follow this thread as I think I have the same problem. I use a Canon PRO-2100 with InkOwl Ink. I see the problem In the dark grey areas when I do black&white printing. My nozzle check is perfect.

I have a Canon PRO-2100 for 3 years and refill using 3th party refillable transparant cardridges of 750 ml and I fill them with 500ml bottles of InkOwl ink.

After all I read here I still have the impression that your patches are printed somehow WITH color management. Some versions of QImage were not synchronizing with the printer driver. I suggest manually setting color management to OFF in the driver plus choosing Printerprofile "OFF".
I recently have bought a 12 color set of 12x1L for my canon PRO-2100. So I am safe for a while. But I follow up on you, maybe for later.

Thank you for the blog post. I am using the combination PRO-2100-third party ink - third party paper and custom icc profiles. I'm not sure whether I will go into that unique calibration, but at least I am happy to now fully understand the purpose and the workflow of this feature.
