I'm looking into buying a set of refillable CLI-521 carts, with an auto reset chip (ARC), to fill with a good quality ink. Before I used compatible disposable ones, which is more expensive and the ink quality is often unknown.
I also refilled cartridges a lot, and used a chip resetter, which...
Thanks @palombian! I now know what to buy. Please allow me some more mulling about the details, just for understanding this device better.
Seems my theory may not be entirely right then about point 7-8 :\. Although if it's true that the hardware flow sensor does not change the cart status if...
It has been a while, but since my last post I bought a MB5150. Great printer overall. Speedy, sharp text with pigment colours that I think will last forever, and the occasional photo (although it lacks the vibrancy of dye-based inks on glossy papers and it cannot do borderless photos, so I plan...
Indeed I saw the Maxify has a wide range. Unfortunately Canon's site is difficult to navigate and lacks an easy comparison tool. But this last part of the study is by no means as difficult as what went before. ;)
Thanks for all your (plural) invaluable advice and explanations!!
Alright, thank you all for explaining. At first things seem easy, like with many things, but then it seems there could be books written about this. But I guess there are, kind of, but they may be in the 'big secret' departments of the printer manufacturers. Oh well I'm lucky enough to have this...
I see, that makes sense.
Notwithstanding this, there still remains the question to the Maxify owners then, forgiving my misuse of the terms "matte pigment ink" and "glossy pigment ink":
Any Maxify owner care to comment?
Ahh, so are the pigments of an otherwise dye-colour printer (used for plain paper) then actually matte pigments (when using the jargon used in photo printers)? As these don't even adhere to the glossy coatings as you say, no wonder that those printers have to use dye photo black.
And a printer...
I didn't read this that well before and didn't know that pigment photo printers have special pigment for glossy and one for matte. Incredible, the more you go into this the more complexity you uncover.
In the Maxify thread this was said though:
So since the type of pigment does not matter, I'm...
I know that thread, ;) you explained there what the advantage is of pigment on normal paper. Basically this part:
But I'll continue in that thread, which makes matters slightly more organised. :)
Ok, so wiping off is not an issue. Great!
Still a bit confused though. What is actually the reason that dye-based printers have a dye-based black next to a pigment black? Does the dye flow nicer with the other colour dyes or something? (I know dye makes nicer colours on photo paper, which is...
Thanks for the write-up. The king (or queen) part was mostly for the fact that it uses four-ink pigment carts. That's unlike any printer I've seen before. They all use dyes for the colours. So since pigment inks produce so much sharper text on plain paper (compared to dyes in my experience) I...
Thanks for that comparison, that looks indeed great for the Maxify, especially knowing that this is pigment ink! The larger carts are indeed a big plus. Bells and whistles that impress me include double sided scanning using the high capacity ADF and a speed that comes in really handy. A true...
Such difficult trade-offs!
But the Maxify should be the king on normal paper, right? Pigment just is so much sharper when I look at my MX870's pigment black text, compared to colour graphics on normal paper.
Alright, thanks! I will probably buy the Maxify then.
One more thing: I find it strange that the Maxify is listed as 600 horizontal dpi. Surely a pigment-based printer should be sharper compared to any dye-based printer (which usually have 1200 dpi or higher). I mean, text on pigment printers...
Interesting that an application can decide that. I always thought it was more like that the application gives the printing contents to the driver and the driver determines based on what's best considering the specific printer hardware and what is printed how to print it.
I also had a CLI-8...
