    For linux mod I think gimp is quite good and about one more thing I would like to mention is Google Picasa-It is good for both printing and organizing photos. It installs its own runtime version of wine. Very slick and makes great prints in most popular sizes.

    Need advice on buying a Printer

    I think this was a host based printer which has some limitations as opposed to a PCL or postscript printer.Try to fire it up print off a configuration, supply status and usage page from the information menu.This will give you some idea of its condition.
