I've been using a P50 inkjet for a while with no problems, but a couple of days ago this started happening:
whenever I print a few (4-5) pages consecutively, the printer slows down to almost a stop.
I'm printing from Photoshop, and my PC has 16GB of ram. Restarting the printer after the problem appears does not seem to help, I have to restart both the pc and the printer for the problem to resolve.
I've checked the cable and re-installed the drivers, but the problem persisted.

Anybody experiencing a similar problem? Any ideas how to resolve this?

It sounds like your printer is having a problem clearing its own cache after it has printed several sheets.

It receives the information from computer via the print spooler correctly,
it prints each sheet but then can only receive further data in very small amounts
hence the speed difference, so the problem is in the printer itself.

My two cents worth..

In devices and printers, right click the printer, click printer properties, click advanced. There are a couple of settings there, see if print directly to the printer makes any difference.

If not, you could use their live chat, (only open during the week) and say the inks are genuine Epson if asked.

Is the USB lead the usual 2 - 3 metres?

Thanks for that, but is there any way to check for something like that? Do you know of any way to reset this printer to factory settings for instance, to check if it has something to do with the internal software?

Printing directly to printer doesn't help, and I checked the cable.

I had the same issue with my P50 (currently i am ditching it) because it wasn't directly connected with my pc. It was connect over my Router and accted as a single workstation printer.

I bought a good branded USB Cable and voila problem solved even with Big printing jobs no problems

I am afraid I dont have an answer to that; it could just be plain worn out.
How old is your printer anyway, you could follow CLS's lead and try a brand new USB cable..

It's about a year and a half old but used rather heavily, I'm seeing 5200 pages printed on WICReset counter utility and those were A4 photos in their majority.
I've tried with a different USB cable and different computer.

It could be a lot of things I guess, including wear, but the strange is that it always happens after 4 prints and it's always the same; the prints finish fine but every back and forth motion of the head takes significantly longer.

If you could gain access to the EPROM chip and expose it to 30 seconds of UV florescent light it
can cause a default reset in the chip and that may even solve the problem.

That's quite interesting, never heard of something like that before.
I'm afraid I can't try that, but I just did something that I think solved the problem; I used the WICReset utility to change the model from P50 to T50, then re-installed the drivers...
I can now print again!

The reset on the EPROM does exactly that without changing models.
Whatever works thats good news well done..
