The Canon MP640 looks similar to the MP620, so I think that the MP640 is a de luxe version of the MP620 with more features, so the MP640 service manual should be useful. Link to the MP640 service manual here: http://www.bendata.de/Downloads/Canon/mp640_e.pdf

See page 6/54 figure 9 in the service manual. I think the part shown in The Hat's post looks like that ink sensor.

Here is the picture of the ink sensor from the service manual:

The service manual has a list of error codes, so is the printer totally dead or does it give an error code on the LCD display or computer monitor? The error code might give a hint of where the part is missing.

Another guess: The part might be part of the paper out door locking mechanism.

No cigar just yet but youre getting there, I also think its possibly something to do with the paper feed system,
the part looks to be about 5 cm long if thats any help..

The smaller Canon MP540 has an auto open door feature, to open the paper output door, when a print job is sent to the printer. That made me think of a door locking part, maybe the MP620 also has this feature?

But where did the part come out from? Please some more details. If the part came from the rear tray or the paper cassette, I think The Hat may be right in suggesting the part has something to do with the paper feed.
