Reality tends to have a very big bite and I was only trying to give it to you straight, sorry. :hide
The newer printers are just not designed to last as long as the older ones,
that is why it is so painful to have one, die on you; they become part of the family.:hit
you're 100% correct though I know, *sighs* I wonder how long our working relationship will last? :hit

to see your total pages printed you'd need to get into service mode and print out your EEPROM report.

here is a partial paste from my 5 year old MP830. TPAGE=37,566

note the waste pad usage D= 1.1%, this was just after i changed the pads and reset. prior to the waste pad change D=95%

just wondering how we can pull that off with the newer printers as there is only one button (power button) on my printer?

I didn't understand that question, so I checked the specs for the MG6220 and found it had only one traditional push button switch, the rest of the push buttons are replaced by illuminated touch sensors. So I see the problem with entering service mode on this printer, as you normally need both the on/off and stop/cancel buttons to enter service mode.

I found this discussion on the druckerchannel.de forum: http://www.druckerchannel.de/forum.php?seite=beitrag&ID=242505&t=servicemode_bei_mg6250_ or a Google translation: http://translate.google.dk/translat...te=beitrag&ID=242505&t=servicemode_bei_mg6250

It seems that even if the touch sensors are not lit, they are still active, so entering service mode should be possible.

Procedures for entering service mode is not the same for all Canon printers, so you may need the instructions from the service manual, which I think is nowhere to be found, if the standard procedure for entering service mode doesn't work. Maybe the procedure from the service manual for the smaller model MG5220 is useful? You find a download link here: http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=60849#p60849 and scroll down to post #85 for download instructions.

You will also need a Canon Service Tool program for performing service mode operations on the newer printers. You find download links and instructions in this thread: http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=7416&p=1

There are different versions of the service tool, and only the newest versions work with both 32 and 64 bit Windows, the older versions only work with 32 bit Windows. The service tools work with Windows XP, Vista, and 7. I don't know if they also work with Windows 8.

Also note the service tool doesn't work with a wireless connection, you have to use a USB connection to perform service mode operations even if your printer is wireless.

I would not recommend experimenting with service mode operations, if there is no problems with the printer, as service mode operations are "uncharted territory" with this printer, but if you try it, please report your results in the service tool thread.

RMM,

Good move buying a few of the ip4700s. I bought mine for $35 new from amazon with free shipping. I should have grabbed at least 2 or3 more for that price. The ink alone cost more than that. Well, my IP4700 just started giving me error B200. I am looking to replace it but don't know with what. From the ones you owned which one is a good replacement that also has an capability for CD/DVD printing, iP4600, MX860, MP560 ? Any other models I should look at? Other opinions welcome. Thanks.

The B200 error is usually caused by high temp. in the heads so you could try giving it a good bath,
I mean leave it soaking in some hot water for a few hours.

If after the good cleaning and drying, it still doesnt work then youll have to shop around for a new print head
but dont dump your printer its still well worth getting a new head for it..

The Hat,

Thank you. Is it worth spending $80 somewhat on ip4700 rather than buying one of the new Canon printers for the same or less cash? What are the pros and cons. What if the problem is not the print head?

Many guys in exactly the same situation as yourself have asked that same question,
but to be honest I think there has only be one report on here
of a new print head not working out and getting the printer back working again.

Its going to be a leap of faith on your part, do you like your old 4700 enough to chance it after all,
effetely you'll then have a new printer and you wont have to change a thing to be up and running again.. :)
