In short: the latest Canon printers mentioned in this link are equipped with a IR-sensor, which will recognize some aftermarket carts using a IR LED diode on the chip and will reject them. Another reason why you should stick with refilling original cartridges.

Just another trick that'll quickly be worked around for third party manufacturers. I wouldn't put it past printer manufacturers to soon come up with a printer that won't print unless the printer can check cartridge serial numbers against a private database like they do with computer games and software.
