Well, instead of drilling the hole in usual place, I drilled it on the side of cartridge, at about half the distance between outlet port and spongeless compartment, angled toward spongeless compartment. It is a bit more difficult to drill the angled hole, but it allows to use a far shorter needle, also I found to be easier to insert the needle and place the tip in right place than the regular German method.

Yes, this avoids:
(1) penetrating the sponge; and
(2) disturbing the contact between filter and sponge,
but it presents a shorter potential path for leaks.

The method has actually been suggested before, rodbam, although this is the first report I have seen of anyone trying it. :D
