Quite rightly this forum carries many messages about using cheap universal ink for refilling cartridges and perhaps this is the main reason for printhead blockages.

However, in my experience using refilled non OEM carts can also cause problems.

In my non enlightened days I used such carts on an IP3000 (sent to an early grave) Invariably I found that the carts were filled with inferior ink and worst of all sometimes leaked due to incorrect filling.

Trying to refill these carts sometimes resulted in ink starvation which I was too naive to notice at the time, no doubt leading to the early demise of my IP3000.

I had a fleeting experience of using chipped carts but the results were disappointing and in my case the chips could not be re-set.

Thank goodness I found this forum. Im using good quality OCP ink at 20p a cartridge and refilling OEM cartridges with the squeasy bottles from Octoinkjet.

I am sure that there are some decent non OEM carts out there but in my experience only genuine Canon carts can be trusted.

There are good non OEM cartridges out there that do work great,
and are real good value especially for someone on a tight budget.

I found that non OEMs filled cartridges are best used once and then discarded
if not the problems usually come later when trying to refill them.

My advice to newbies is to only refill OEM cartridges and dont be tempted by
the cheap alternative compatible cartridges because therere your disaster waiting to happen.

A complete refill, cartridges, resetter, quality inks, syringes, bottles, plugs and all the incidentals
needed for your particular printer are not cheap for the initial set-up
but will pay huge dividends for years after in the quality of your prints and the pure pleasure of it all.
Happy printing. :thumbsup

I'm new to the forum but must say that I've read about the wisdom of using OEM cartridges rather than non-OEM so many times already in this forum that I guess I'm gonna have to take the OEM route. I was just about to buy non-OEM refillable cartridges with Auto Reset Chips (ARC) for my Canon MP560. Glad I found this forum first. (Some time back I bought non-OEM refillable ARC cartridges for my other Canon printer, the MP530, and they've worked okay. But they're still relatively new - maybe two refills so far? If they stop working, guess I'll know why!)

Now I just need to decide on top vs. German method of refilling, what chip resetter to buy, which non-OEM refill ink to use, what volume of ink to buy... oh, sigh.

Pianoman you don't have to make much of a decision as both refilling methods work very well & once you're comfortable with refilling you can try both methods out & see what fits you the best.
The names of good quality inks that seem to be mentioned here a lot are Image Specialist, (from Precision Colors if you live in the Americas & Ocktoink if you live in the UK, Europe) Hobbicolors (On Ebay) OCP (R-JetTec America) MIS & there are others. I think all these companies sell the resetters & everything you will need for refilling.
I bought 4oz bottles from Precision Colors & that seems like a good size for me.
