Welcome Trapper,

Scanning describes the action of converting a page of text or graphics into a file of the page that is scanned. The file is created, but no printing action takes place.

Copying is sometimes the combined action of scanning and printing out a page of text or graphics. A file may or may not be created as part of the action. There are copying processes such as xerography that do not use scanning and there are modern multifunction printers that can scan, print, and make copies. Their copying processes do combine scanning and printing.

There are two online resources which are very good. The forum is comp.periphs.scanners and www.scantips.com is an outstanding website devoted to scanners.
