I have another newbie question. Was getting ready to order SquEasy bottles from OctoInk and noticed that site sells empty CLI-8 cartridges for 41 cents each. At that price, why bother with purging? Am I missing something here?

As far as I know they are not purged but I am open to correction on that. Also last time I contacted him he did not have full sets.

Best to email him, he is very helpful.

The bottles are great, no messy syringes, no trying to siphon off the dregs of the bottle, just invert and squeeze, job done ;)

Martin of Octoink has a good comparison of both methods here...

I just had a look on the OctoInk web page & it said the cartridges are not purged & they only have cyan, magenta & yellow but looking at the flushing techniques found on this forum it's not difficult for you to do yourself. Precision Colors have a 4 Cli6 set for your ip5000 that have been flushed & reconditioned but there's no photo black. Here's the link http://cgi.ebay.ca/Reconditioned-Ca.../140471459868?pt=BI_Toner&hash=item20b4c0601c
This leads me to ask the experts here if we can buy 8 of these cartridges from Octoink & use the chips out of our original cartridges & maybe relabel them somehow to the correct colours. I've had no luck so far on Ebay or anywhere else for an 8 set of Cli8 cartridges for the pro 9000. Lucky for me our fellow forum member Roy has come to my rescue & is sending me 4 Cli8 to get me up & running so I can flush out my cartridges & start out fresh using the Image Specialists inks then I can get some profiles made.

I haven't found the Red and Green carts but have bought the rest on ebay.

There are a few on ebay uk at the moment, but you need to search by "cli-8 empty" (omitting the " of course)

Never yet seen the red and green on there, apart from new, but if all else fails I'll but a couple of new ones as an investment.

I recently found a vendor on ebay selling red and Green OEM cartridges for $4.99 each. Postage was about $1.00 combined. I have yet to see empty green and red on ebay. Sometime worth the search for oem cartridges.

Thanks. Sorry if this seems dense, but if they're not purged--in effect "empty"--what's the point? Seems like this would only be for someone who doesn't have a set of Canon carts with their printer. Again, am I missing something?

When you purge a cartridge it takes some time before they are dry enough to refill them with ink so if you use the ones that came with your printer it means the part where the cartridge meets the print head is left exposed to the air. I don't know if this will dry out the ink that's there & cause problems so most people like to have a spare set of cartridges so they can be purged with plenty of time to dry out & to also have a ready set of cartridges already refilled ready to swap over any time an in printer cartridge becomes empty.

Thanks, Rod. Now I understand. One more question. Maybe this is covered somewhere already. I don't need to purge before the first time I refill, or do I?

No I didn't but it means we are mixing the OEM Canon inks with the refill inks which is perfectly OK. When you get your pro 9000 you might want to get custom profiles made for the refill inks & the particuler paper you are using for near perfect results but we must be sure the inks are not a mix of OEM & refill. I'm still on my first refill & so far my prints look very good with the mixed inks so untill they start to look a bit strange I won't bother with any custom profiles & who knows the new refill inks might look very good to me & never produce strange looking colours. They say here that it takes about 3 refills before we can be sure all the OEM ink is out of the system, if you're not happy with the prints using the mixed inks then you should flush out the cartridges & see how that prints up. As I said my prints look really good so far.
