So my ip4500 stopped printing Magenta (it always seems to be magenta). No problem, I have a refurbed print head I bought just for this occasion.
I install it, and all is right in the world. All the colors are back at 100%. I use this thing pretty solid for 1 day. Tonight as I'm printing the magenta stops again! (the carts are all full)

I mean I print a test pattern and nothing. It's funny, but all the letters in the test pattern, like M for Magenta is in blue ink and not black. (strange)
So I figure, okay, maybe a purge problem? So I go a grab another print head less ip4500 i have kicking around and the problem is still there.

Now I have a full working print head that i am reluctant to test in any of these machines, because I just can't take a chance that these printers are offing the print heads prematurely. I mean this print head is still in the pristine state. It's far from being gunked up, and you can see where the outlet port on the cartridge has made a seal to the printhead just fine. I put a can of compressed air to the magenta and hit the screen and it gave me a dab of magenta into a paper towel on the other side? (not a huge amount but enough to show color)

I'm tired, been up late, but have decided to stop any troubleshooting until I've had some rest. Just wondering *if* it's possible these printers have end of life mechanisms built in to kill them. I have never had a problem like before.

I have tried multiple carts and 2 separate machines, however I am reluctant to add any more print heads into troubleshooting as this just seems to be a bit crazy. I recall somebody mentioning that magenta seemed to be going prematurely on more than one machine they were working with.

There is absolutely NO color on the nozzle check for magenta. All other colors look mint.

Looking forward to your thoughts!

Could you possibly be using magenta pigment ink to refill with?

Had me run to my refill table :)

Nope dye base Image Specialists. I have another printer that is printing fine on the same ink.

Sounds like you encountered true premature failure, like my MP970 where upon start-up, it blew the electronics on the head. Be very careful installing new heads in there because in certain situations bad control electronics within the printer will take out or destroy good heads in one shot. I'm not saying this is the case but be mindful of the possibility.

I am pretty sure that my MP970 did that to the head as the last time it was used it ran perfectly and when I plugged it in again, it simply no longer recognized the head...end of story. I put the MP970 down. Not worth the risk of finding out by sacrificing a good printhead. If you have another good iP4500 body, then stop using this one and give up on it.

I know on the BCI-6 generation of machines, defective control boards will take out printheads and eat them for breakfast. In the service center, it's no big deal testing,, but at the full smack of the cost of a printhead at retail, it's a different situation. Looks like it's a shortcoming of the Canon control electronics..................... Been there, three times now. Let's see, Toyota unintended acceleration and Canon unintended burnouts. Phew what's the world coming to!

Is it a plot?

It could be a serial printhead killer!

The ink cartridges getting smaller. It sure seems like a plot.

Now you need to put the MP970 with the prior printers in your signature.

Epson, Canon, HP... A "few"
I remember when the Magenta was the problem for me...

I tried OCP ink, Image Specialists, I requested different batches of the same ink in case ink age was a factor... and so on..

In the end the overriding factor seemed to be weather and temperature... Can't remember what I nailed it down to but eventually I went and got a different printer, left the iP4200's and MP830 the hell alone and played with my Epsons for 6 months... Came back and it was Cyan causing problems, Magenta ran fine...

Still to this day I have no idea what I did right/wrong...

Neither do I, I have other printers (same models) and it just always seems to be magenta that goes, though occasionally cyan goes. I have done some pretty heavy printing on them.

I found an excellent source on refurbished print heads and figured that was going to be my route with these. In my heart of hearts I believe this is an end of life issue. I think if I throw another print head at the same printer it's going to kill it after a day as well.

When I put that new print head in it printed like it was brand new.

Hi Nanosec
Am I smelling a rat here, a friend at work bought a 4500 the same time as I did (about 13 Months ago) when I went in to work Monday he commented that his printer was not printing red only yellow this is the exact same problem that my printer had on the weekend. The Magenta cart was still half full in both printers.
I tried the windex in a spare cart, the flushing with warm water, the flushing of the purge pads, another refilled cart, all the normal tricks to no avail.

Am I smelling a rat as this seems very strange as his printer has very light use and mine has a pounding, is there something in the program/printer that plans it to fail.
Aussie.

How do you know the refurb'ed print head has no internal damage? Do you get any kind of warranty on it? Sounds very risky to me.
