Newbie to refill has Pixma 1600 problem.

I just attempted(for the first time) to refill the 2 cartridges in my Canon Pixma 1600 using a very unorthodox manner. Both cartridges were bone dry and left too long that way but I knew this printer was working sweet before.. However, what I did was to drill...yes drill holes and pour in ink salvaged from full tanks in an Epson that wasn't working. I just tried the black first to see if I was just wasting my time. I sealed the hole and low and behold this printed as new. So I decided to try th CMY Tri-cart. Same method but no go. C & M won't print and yellow is weak to. I did reset the chips using software and they all show full. So what's wrong? Any ideas would be welcomed. Thanks. This little printer is a far cry from my IGEN3 but it's all I have at home and I love a good challenge.
