I just bought a brand new Cannon IP3500. My intention is to use the original cartridges for my Cannon MP610 and just use the refill for the Cannon IP3500. Since I only paid $20 (after rebate) for the IP3500, I want to use this printer to test the refill and not worry about the warranty.

I bought a few set of used CLI-8 and PGI-5 from EBay. They look old, but have not been refilled before. Do I have to purge them before I can refill? I intend to use the German Durchstich method, I wonder if it will work with the dried out sponge cartridges?

One last question, the Cannon IP3500 is a brand new printer, can I use the refill cartridges for the initial setup? Im wondering if the brand new printer would accept refill cartridges because as far as the printer concern, these cartridges are empty. I may have to use the brand new cartridges that came with the box for initial set up and replace it with the refill.

Sorry, one more for those who has the Cannon Chip Resetter. Will it make any different whether you reset the chip BEFORE or AFTER you refill the cartridges with inks?

Thank you for your input. Im so glad that I found this site.

You should purge them with hot distiled water. Then shakes as much ink as you can to make them dry. Refill with your method. Do wait for complete dry because it will absorb ink better.

It does not matter.

I've been purging carts for years with a home made device hooked up to a utility sink faucet. San Francisco has fairly soft water - not much in the way of disolved salts. I dry the carts completely as I don't want to dilute the ink at all. Some colors are absorbed into the sponge better than others when the sponge is completely dry, but they all eventually absorb well. Very possible that there is no difference in the final outcome between Smile's technique and mine anyway!

Hi Dan,

I bought also a couple of used CLI-8 and PGI-5 sets from eBay. I make a reset first and refilled them
afterwards.
Reason for me, if the chips are damagged I simply don't refill those cartridges.

Regards, Gompy

I always purge the pigment black carts but as yet I've not had to purge the dye carts.

Hi. My ink resetter works either resetting before or after filling. It seems to make no difference. I have even been able to correct a "cart not recognised" message with a couple of resets one after the other. Good luck

If I were you I would save the brand new cartridges for future use. I wouldn't use them on my MP610 untill I need to. I would use refilled cartridges on both printers. New cartridges still sealed can be stored for much longer. You just keep them saved until you need them someday. It's a good plan to buy used empty OEM carts and refill them, especially you said you don't care about the warranty since it's cheap. You do want to purge them before refilling especially the pgi5 cart. They will work like new if you purge them before refilling.

If I was in your position (and did not have a resetter)(and was not worried about the warranty) , I would put the new unopened carts in storage and install the refill carts. The machine should , ( I think) identify the carts as expired and offer you the choice of installing new carts or overriding and continuing with "empty" carts and suffering the loss of the Ink Monitor and possible loss of warranty,( via the machine memory record log). The Ink Monitor will be restored if and when you put "proper new " carts in.

If I had a resetter I would put the new unopened carts in storage, reset the refillled carts , install them (with no problem messages) , retaining the ink monitor , not affecting the warranty ,(no record log entry of override). Should a warranty problem develop ,just insure the "proper" carts are installed to accompany machine to it repair.
You can start of the machine with its proper carts if you wish , for the head alignment and test prints/nozzle checks , and then uninstall , elastic band the orange stoppers back on and put into storage.

yes you can put carts that have been refilled and declared empty into a a new machine. I took my refilled carts from my ip4200 and put them into my MP600 when I bought it, and kept the new carts i got with the MP600 for future use. You simply have to do the push reset for 10 seconds thing again. But yeah, It does def work!
