The message "Put in cartridge" refers to the print head, not the ink cartridges. These older printers cannot tell when you put new cartridges in them. I have never seen or heard of a situation where an MP780 incorrectly tells you to "Put in cartridge" when the print head is already installed. Therefor, it appears that there is a hardware problem, maybe a connector not plugged in or plugged in incorrectly or something burned out.

I also don't know what the clicking sound is. You will probably have to take the printer apart again and see if you can identify something not put together correctly.

Many thanks for putting your mind to this.

Irrespective of which mode copy /fax /scan /photo I put the printer into the same message 'Put in cartridge' appears. It is only when the computer is linked to the printer that the clicking sound - from around the motor area I would say at best guess - starts. I will probably have to reinvest but I would like to solve this anyway.
