sharing my MP830 waste pad replacement experience - w pics

my MP830 was at 37,000 pages printed, waste pad usage at 93%, knew that at 95% i'd start to get replace waste pads warnings, etc. decided to take a shot at giving this printer some more life and replace the waste pads. did not have high expectations but worst case was to see what the ink pads looked like after 37,000 pages to see if i could have just reset the waste counter and kept printing.

i dug in using the manual/DVD i bought from Trigger37(nifty-stuff member), canon MP830 service manual and the following 2 translated drunkerchannel links:
http://translate.google.com/transla...uessige_tinte_voll&sl=de&tl=en&hl=en&ie=UTF-8
http://translate.google.dk/translat...resttintentank_bei_canon_pixma_mp530_tauschen

tips and encouragement from Trigger37 along the way also helped

i had ordered a waste pad kit a few years ago, so was all set there.

best to go slow, follow the tips re taking pics, notes, organizing parts as you remove.

couple of gotchas i ran into:
- ribbon cables were tough to get back in
- i plugged one in backwards and almost gave up until i looked closely at my pics to figure it out
- don't force removal or reinstall
- can be frustrating along the way, but once done the next time will be much easier
- pads in middle for PGI ink were gummed up pretty good, especially near the waste tube, so may have clogged soon. CLI pads on right were heavily saturated

below are the pics i took along this adventure

at 37,000 pages not sure if this effort was worth it, but was a somewhat fun exercise to try to give this MP830 some more life

J

This is certainly a walk through step by step guide for anybody who is
contemplating changing the diapers on their printer.

Thanks jimbo 123 for all your hard work in putting this together and posting it here,
the good thing is it will be there for future reference not just for the MP830 but all of the AIO printers.
:thumbsup

Awesome pictorial chronicling over your waste pad replacement odyssey. :bow

Can I send my MP830 to you for pad replacement? Just kidding... or am I?! ;)

Hi jimbo123, what ink where you using for the Pigment cart. It look quite clear that the absorber sponge did not absorb that particular pigment waste ink. You see the sponge thicken at the center but failed to spread through from the center of sponge as it accumulate.

ink build up may have been a result of the 1/2" plastic tube coming off the center PGI5 drain tube. if you look in the below pic you can see it lodged in the pad.

been using hobbicolors ink for 5 years now with great success. have 178 refills over 5 different PGI5 ink carts, never flushed. one PGI5 lasted 77 refills, current PGI5 is at 71 refills.

my 4 CLI8 carts are all original, over 5 years old and still going strong. each CLI8 cart has been refilled over 50 times, also never flushed.

have learned much from the nifty-stuff forum over the years, just trying to share and help others

like most stuff in life, it's only difficult the first time. if i have to do it again, it will be a breeze, give it a shot when its time. i'd be more than glad to help out if you get stuck.

my MP830 had 37,000 pages printed, the canon service manual said it had a useful life of 19,000 pages.

the numbers said to not bother and just replace the printer, but i figured why not take a shot at giving the MP830 some more legs.

guess only time will tell

Amazing effort and will no doubt help others in the future. But I noted was the large number of refills with the German method without problems and not purged. Is this something to do with the later carts? I and others have had inkflow problems with the 521 series tried purging and changing carts and were now questioning the German method as possibly causing this problem, but you obviously have no such problems.

Have saved your project the amount of detail is priceless.
