Hello,

First post. It took me a while to find this forum/site. Great information.

I am trying to print a special transparent ink on to flat copper sheet.
I used Epson 4900 before it finally died. I got a Epson Artisan 50 with PVC ID tray to handle a small copper clad. (3"x5").
The image is simple rectangle. I was using 720x360 resolution with 3.5 pl drop size on Epson 4900. Wet layer is about 1.4 micron.
I am trying to duplicate this with Epson Artisan 50, but no information on what resolution it prints if used with CD tray/PVC ID tray.
Programming guide fo Epson 6 color print (L800) states that if CD media is selected that it prints with Super Photo quality @ 5760x1440.

Anyone know if there is to verify the print resolution and drop vol on Artisan 50 when using CD media?

Thanks much in advance.

Epson Artisan 50 has the following specs (extracted from DP Review):

Printer type Mid-size
Color technology Inkjet
Max color resolution 5760 x 1440 dpi
Max B/W resolution 5760 x 1440 dpi
Droplet size 1.5 pl
Photo print speed 10 sec (4"x 6")
Ink type Dye-based
Weight 12.10 lb
Dimensions 17.7 x 11.3 x 22.5″ (450 x 287 x 572 mm)

If used with CD tray/PVC ID tray, this probably use not more than the maximum colour res indicated above.

Thanks for the information.
My goal is to print at lower resolution using CD /PVC ID tray.
With 5760x1440 @ 1.5 pl, I am getting 20x thickness compared to Epson 4900 with 720x360@3.5 pl.

Any insight on if it is possible to change the print resolution with Artisan 50?

TIA

Epson's printheads can deliver different drop sizes, and they typically specify the smallest one only - e.g. 1.5pl , but this could go up to 7 or 10pl depending on the driver settings, but details about this are not listed in detail.
Epson's print resolution is 720 dpi max, 720 image pixels per inch, but every image pixel needs to be printed with a color , and this rendering of every image pixel is done with higher resolution within each pixel e.g. within a 4x8 raster - 2880x5760 at the end, and with a varying number of overprints and possibly different droplet sizes. The driver does not let you address any of these ink drops individually but only the resulting mix of colors for every image pixel.
So it is not clear what you want to acheive - faster printing with lower resolution - or limit the amount of ink placed onto your substrate ? Are you printing halftone images or only B/W graphics ?
You get the highest resolution with Epson photo printers when using the RPM option in the driver - which is available for matte or glossy papers, I'm not sure aboutthe CD mode.

Thank you for the information.
I have CISS with Epson Artisan 50. Only one ink is filled (black tank).
For the initial tests, I am printing a rectangle in black color. (in word)
My goal is to get a target thickness of 1.4 um. Speed is not important.
With Epson 4900, I was using Wasatch SoftRIP to control the resolution and drop vol.
I do not see Artisan 50 as support printer with SoftRIP.
Is there different RIP software that support Artisan 50?

Thank you

I'm not aware of RIP software for smaller desktop printers, and a target thickness is typically not a parameter relevant when printing to paper. You rather may go and find another Pro 4900, used and in working condition so that you can continue with those printer, driver, RIP settings which work for you.

Thanks for all the advises. Old Epson 4900 is hard to find and most used ones are with issues with printhead. Repacement print heads is like $1k. So i ended up with Chinese flatbed printer with DX8 print head.
