I have a cheap all in one for printing letters, copying etc.
As canon ink replacement carts are the same as buying a new printer was wondering if these can be refilled? Carts in question are PG540 & CL541 or just get 3rd party refilled carts?
Is there any problems that anyone knows of?

You can refill your cartridges. For instance, here is a video on refilling the tri-color CL-541. There are other videos demonstrating this same method and different methods, including how to refill the PG-540 pigment black cartridge.

How many refills you get out of a cartridge of this kind is variable and may only be a 3-5 times according to reports on the forum. It is unclear if flushing and soaking the "clogged" cartridge will help. It may be that nozzles irreparably burn out when ink runs out and the cartridge continues to print. In other words, if you notice missing ink then stop printing anything other than nozzle checks until you resolve the issue, hopefully just by refilling.

The forum typically recommends the highest quality refill ink you can source and that that ink be designed specifically for your printer and NOT a "Universal" ink. One of the reasons for this is that Universal inks may be inferior, especially in their ability to cool the nozzles during printing and increasing the risk of nozzle burn out. (Canon print heads heat up before spitting ink out)

I do not know what ink or where to get it for your cartridges. You might want to visit Octoink in the UK and ask them what they recommend. The owner of the refilling web site is a trusted forum member @websnail. Then again, since these cartridges seem to be so finicky for refilling, you might want to try an inexpensive ink at first to get your sea legs. If a cartridge fails then buy a new one and continue on. You will eventually save money.

The forum consensus is to use OEM Canon cartridges for refilling if at all possible as they are the best made. Unfortunately, the forum does not have nearly as much information on refilling these types of cartridges that have the print head embedded in the cartridge as the amount of info on other cartridges that require a separate print head for use.

Please report your experience to help enrich the forum knowledge.
