I have acquired an Officejet 6000. It has not been used for two years. I have not turned it on yet.

Should i try to clean the heads using the printer functions - would the heads be damaged if no ink flows?

Or immediately remove the printhead and clean it.

Should i use water or cartridge flush?

PS. When i switch the printer on could the printhead be damaged if no ink is flowing, is there a way to get to the printhead without switching on, or is this not an issue?

Thanks for any advice.

i think it will be fine as long as you dont have to print or do a clean.warm distilled water and some unscented ammonia based cleaner will work. After rinsing i'll let it to dry for a day just to be on the safe side. i don't about hp printers but on canons there is an option to print a nozzle check page(w/fresh ink) and can be used to determine whether the print head can be used without prior cleaning.
