Guess what: there are two versions of those HP 364 cartridges: the normal one in which only the sponge area is saturated and the ink chamber is empty and the one which is the XL-version: sponge area is saturated and the ink chamber is completely full (like normal Canon cartridges).

I think it should be very easy to refill those cartridges. Not sure the German Durchstich method will work.....

Do you know if the cartridges are chipped or if there are any other impediments to refilling?

Those cartridges are chipped. The chip underneath the prism. Just look further on the druckerchannel.de. But you can disable the ink level monitor just like the CLI-8 cartridges.

Yes, I see it now (my knowledge of German is nil).
It looks like there is a clear plastic panel on the side near the chip. Can the ink level be viewed from there?

Yes you can look at the clear plastic panel to have a notion that your ink is about to run low. Unfortunately it is a bit more difficult to estimate the ink level as in the case with CLI-8 cartridges. However you have to take into account that the cheaper 364 version only the sponge area is saturated with ink. Even after the ink has run out in the ink chamber you should be able to print at least more than 100 pages (5 % coverage). So don't worry.

Something similar: there is also a new A3+ printer to be released -probably based on this same printhead- the HP Photosmart B8550 (not to be confused with the pigment based B8850). The only minor thing is that there is no grey ink cartridge to ensure neutral B/W prints, like the Canon MP980 printer.
