I recently bought a refill kit (Ink and blank cartridges) from MIS for my 1100d printer. This printer has the individual giant color tanks 10 black, 11 C/M/Y, and has a separate printhead for each color. The printer has only had the starter carts and one full set of OEM carts run through it (the colors are all still at around 50%, only the black ran out). I filled and installed the black cartridge, and it ran for about 70 pages, but then started streaking and finally jammed up, saying 'Replace defective black printhead'. I removed the printhead and found that there was a large amount of dried black ink all over the printhead. I cleaned it off, but it still did not work. I then soaked it in a 50/50 solution of warm water and household ammonia. This cleared it out for about five prints, though the print quality was not good, and then it gave me the 'damaged printhead' error again.

I will be calling MIS tomorrow, but if anyone has any suggestions on how to solve this, please let me know. I had pretty good faith in their products, but now I'm not so sure. I'm hoping I can get a refund from them, so I can at least buy a new printhead and OEM cartridge if I can't get the printer working again. I was planning on doing large print runs, however, and OEM ink, even though far cheaper than any other inkjet out there, is still too far out of my price range.

Just as a suggestion I'd contact Gemini Colours in Holland and ask to speak to Robert... He was tweaking my ear about the HP printers (which is why I ended up posting my post asking about them) so he seems to have some input. He's unlikely to bad mouth MIS but he might have some ideas and input on what could be causing the problem.

Part of me wonders if perhaps there was a chemical reaction between the OEM ink and the 3rd party stuff but I also remember there were some issues reported about the new MIS cartridges for the HP printers on their forums. Unfortunately they have a policy of closing down the forum while the moderator (guy called "Marine") is away so I can't access the information at present.

Phoning MIS would definitely be in order though and for what it's worth I think this is a new area for them to delve into so whilst their reputation on Epsons is excellent, I'm not sure it extends to other printer makes..

MIS left me on hold for long stretches of time, and basically said 'We've never had a problem like this before', and tried to blame it on my printhead (which is rated for 10 sets of cartridges, and has only had 1.5 run through it). They're giving me a refund, but now I have to buy a new printhead and new black cartridge, so all this has done is cost me extra money, and saved nothing. They may be good with Epsons, but do not buy their HP refill kits. I should have known something was wrong when I saw that they have zero information on any HP printers less than a few years old and zero information on this in their knowledge base.

Closing their forums instead of locking posts but leaving readable is also very unprofessional.

Going over this again, it's just far too expensive for me to do the print runs with OEM HP ink. So does anyone know of any refill kits that /do/ work with the HP Business Inkjets that take the 10/11 ink and 11 print heads, or should I just scrap it and buy a Canon or Epson that can be refilled? I'm not too happy with MIS right now, so even if I buy an Epson, what are my alternatives for getting good refill ink for a C88 or equivalent?

Hmm... not good all round... I do know that the forums get closed whenever Marine (the moderator) is away on training, etc.. but I think the reason they do that is because there's no other staff who can keep an eye on it and with the prevelance of forum spammers, it's not great...

I'll suggest to Marine that they consider at least leaving the forums viewable while he's away so people can refer to previous posts, right now it's a bit pointless otherwise.

As for their HP kits, I suspect you're right... I'm guessing they tried them out, figured they worked ok and didn't really go much further. I do remember that people were not impressed with the kits though when feedback on the carts was requested and I'd guess they're rethinking the product, supplier, etc...

If you're still interested in an HP solution though, I'd definitely drop Gemini Colours a call and see if they can shed any light on things..

I honestly can't comment on whether the HP's are worth it or not as I've never tried but as to the last question, the C88 inks from MIS are very good and I wouldn't let your experience re: the HP's ruin that impression. I have used SOME of their Canon ink but now source my stuff from Gemini as it's closer and cheaper (no customs charges) so I couldn't be sure it was the same stuff (is for Epsons though)

Only problem I've had with the Canon stuff was in my MP750 when the compats I had for a quick temp use reacted badly to the MIS ink and caused a couple of clogs. Was a pain to fix up so with hindsight I'll not touch compats and if I did I'd flush with cleaning fluid first before using them with anything else. But that's just me and there's enough Canon experts on here you should listen to more on that front.

Considering the massive amount of ink your cartridges hold i'd love to get my hands on your printer!
69ml for the black, thats megga, canons biggest is 27 i believe.
Cartridge World will re-fill your cartridges for you, I do/did (last day tomorrow) for 15 for the black, i know its not as cheap as doing it yourself but they do use the right ink, and hopefully know what they r doing.

I'll probably try to keep it running, though I'm very aggrivated that I now have to pay $30 for the printhead on top of $30 for another black cart (while I could have bought 2 black carts otherwise). Plus there's MIS ink still in the tubing between cartridge and printhead that I hope won't ruin the new one.

What really irritates me is how these companies advertise as 'compatible', but will not stand up behind their product. I think if there's any risk that the product will damage the printer, they should not sell it. Another company I called basically said "Do not buy ink from us, because we cannot guarantee that the same thing won't happen." Why would they sell the product in the first place if they're unsure about it?

I looked at MIS' website and saw that the C88 refillable blanks + 2 oz ink + syringes/priming adapter is over $100. That's... not much of a savings, really. Does anyone know of a cheaper place that sells reliable refill kits?

Agreed.. It bugs me with the amount of sites selling CIS's refillable carts, etc.. and they haven't a clue how to support them... Must admit I'm surprised to the result you saw with the HP printers but my guess is that they may have tested on one printer and found they worked ok and left it at that...

When Marine gets back I'll drop him a line and see what he can tell me about the HP side of things...

They are selling the cartridges on the expensive side (although they do work well).. I'd drop Gemini a line again and see if they can help.. I know they have the same cartridges in now and I already get my ink from them too so they may be able to help.

Hi Fenrir Enterprises,

I have used Image Specialist (I believe it's the same as MIS) in my HP 1100DTN for over a dozen cartridges and have had no problems. What is strange is the fact that you had build up on the printhead and the printer reconized that the printhead was damaged, do to the buildup. I wonder if the cartridges and/or the ink you used were contaminated.
