I was impressed watching this video demo of cartridge flushing. I gave it a try first on a dye based yellow cartridge and sure nuff it came out almost as white as the driven snow. Then a tried a pigmented black cartridge. I flushed for ten minutes and sure a lot of black water came out of the big hole but the sponge remained just about as dark as when I started. I was wondering if this was just a characteristic of the PMT-BK ink and there was no point in trying to ever get a white sponge?

Correct. It is unlikely you will get the Pigment Black ink cartridge sponge snow white ever again with simple flushes. That is OK.
