Druckerchannel.de has tested a resetter for the relatively new PGI-550/CLI-551 cartridges. A Google translation is here. The translation is not the best, "In a cartridge range of around 500 S / W pages and 680 color pages can be reset at 100 tons of pages to print." should have read "At a cartridge page yield of around 500 B/W pages and 680 colour pages a lot of pages can be printed with 100 resets.

The resetter is limited to 100 resets or to 40 resets for a cheaper version. It should be caused by a Canon patent (?). Does anybody know more about this limitation due to a Canon patent? @cls maybe?

There was a reply suggesting resetters without limitation are available in China.

Strange, the link above produces a 404 error, but the link in the German article works. The links look identical to me. When you insert the link from the original article and click enter a few extra characters are inserted in the link. The link works if I copy it from the draft, but when I post then the inserted longer link is shortened and produces the same error 404. @Nifty I wonder if this is a forum software problem with long links or the Chinese do not comply with web programming rules ?

I think prohibiting import and sale of a product that is violating a patent is an EU legislation and not only German legislation. But are the resetters for older Canon chips then also illegal? Or do the new PGI-x50/CLI-x51 chips use a new and patented technology which is not used in the older chips? But then why is it legal if the number of available resets is limited? To me it looks like the manufacturer(s) of the resetters became greedy and something in the explanation is not true.

I get the same 404 error also, but followed @PeterBJ idea of pasting the link rather than clicking on it works.
Here is the resetter and it clearly shows a 100 label on the side of it..

@cls has not responded to our request ?

Thank you for the link to the discussion. I think It is hard to figure out the truth. I don't understand how 40 or 100 resets are not patent violations, but an unlimited number of resets is.
