I haven't been following the inkjet market recently because my old Pixma MP540 is still going strong for my needs, but a friend asked me to look at some models for him.

Does anyone know why printer resolution dropped in recent years? 🤔
I mean my Pixma is at least 4800x2400 dpi for printing and the same for scanning so I wanted to know, why currently everything seems to fall around 2400x1200 dpi and the scanners only 600x1200 dpi?

I suppose 1200 dpi could be enough for amateur photo printing at home but why is that drop in resolutions and marketing? 😃
We were looking at this model: https://en.canon-cna.com/printers/pixma-g3411/specifications/

Thanks!

effective print resolution of almost all printers is in the range to 300 - 400 ppi - image pixels per inch, but the color for all these pixels needs to be rendered which requires a higher 'internal' resolution like 9600x4800 or 5760x2880 etc which technically is correct but irritating at the same time - you cannot control all these subpixels - the driver settings will typically get you 600-720ppi for Canon/Epson. Please see some tests here
