My canon 9500 mark ii printer gives me an error saying lid (cover) is open when it is not. I have to lift the cover up and then close it again to reset error but now I have to put a little weight on the cover to get the printer to work. Where is the sensor for this and is it something easy to fix?

The lid open/closed sensor is a micro switch, which is not hermetically sealed, so over time the contact surfaces can become corroded. This switch can be opened and cleaned, see this post: http://www.printerknowledge.com/threads/canon-error-message.7788/#post-60172

The position of the switch can be seen on page 7/61 figure 4 in the service manual, which is found here: ftp://mail.racs.co.bw/Canon/Bubble Jet Printers/PRO SERIES/Pro9500 MarkII/Service Manual/pro9500ii-sm.pdf

The site is very slow to load, so have patience.

Don't try to unsolder the switch, you will melt the plastic housing and ruin the switch. If you cannot disconnect the connector for the switch, then cut the wires and resolder them after cleaning the switch. Use heat shrinkable tubing for insulation of the solder joints.

Instead of removing and disassembling the switch you could try to spray a little electronics contact cleaner, preferably with lubricant, or WD-40 into the switch and operate it several times. Maybe that will clean the contact surfaces, else you will have to open the switch and clean the contact surfaces.

Never use a spray product containing silicone inside electronics. Silicone can ruin contact surfaces, causing all kind of problems.

Here is photo of the latch on the top lid that engages the micro switch which sits directly below it.

You can follow PeterBJ detailed instruction to correct this problem switch for once and for all or take the easy route like me and use the lazy mans way.

You can easily add a bit of wax, glue, card, or tape to this latch to extend it slightly so it will trigger the switch better and stop this annoying error from popping up all the time on you.

Could the position of the switch be adjusted? It is certainly worth checking if the switch is functional but not working properly because its position has shifted. But try The Hat's idea first as it does not involve removing the cover of the printer.

The switch position could have shifted as you suggest but you would have to remove the whole cover from the printer to gain access to it, does it warrant that type of intervention if it’s not broken.

The top cover lid could have also have shifted or gotten twisted or bent somehow over time.

@The Hat translator: wax=hot glue. :hugs Do NOT put wax inside your printer!

We older chickens knew what you meant, The Hat. Good thing you're not a surfer or you may have called it "sex wax" instead. :gig
