Canon's new series of printers ip3600/4600 use the PGI-220 and CLI-221 cartridges. Although cheaper, they probably have a new chip - so we start all over for resetting? I think that I will buy a spare MP830 (or 850), or a 4500 befor they disappear.

The PGI-220 and the CLI-221 are also regionalised. In Europe they will be sold as PGI-520 and CLI-521, just like movies on DVD's. I think Canon wil make very strong encryption this time and also using regionalised versions to make it extra difficult to overcome the chip.

Does that mean that someone with a printer using PGI-220 carts cannot use PGI-520 carts in it?

On the question of encryption, I don't think Canon wanted to stop their chips being reset - only delay the development of a resetter. If they had wanted to they could have made them non-resettable. By allowing them to be reset eventually, they can continue with a new model and a different chip knowing that their faithful followers will hope to crack that one too, and not go elsewhere for their next printers.

Do keep in mind that the MP830 is like the ip4300/ip5200 in the fact that it has only the 1pl, 5pl, and text sized heads (20pl IIRC).

I was going to say the mp830 was onsale for $151 on buy.com, but it just jumped up in price to $228.99
The mp530 still onsale for $105 shipped.
http://www.buy.com/prod/canon-mp530...er-canon-pixma-mp530/q/loc/101/202866378.html

again, the mp530 is more like the ip4200. Smaller head. But still $100 for a auto doc feeder or a spare canon that takes pgi-5/cli-8.

The current "deals" are the mx850 from amazon.com or buy.com at for $165-$170 shipped, or
the mp530 shipped for $102 from buy.com

I think the best price of the mp970 currently is $230 shipped
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16828102262

The mx850, featuring Ethernet, presuming .69c/pound shipping, is 164.93 shipped from Amazon.com, or $169.00 shipped from buy.com, or Ace Photo Digital.

I bring up the mp970 since it is the 7 tank model, offering both 1pl printheads, light inks, and the big text black. It may be the mp980 might provide superior output with just the primary colors and a light black. But regardless for AIOs they are about the same price and IIRC the mp970 comes with ethernet.

Amazon.com has the ip4500 for $122.11 shipped. Newegg comes in second at 124.98 shipped followed by Adorama Camera at $128.05 to ship to the west coast.

This represents a $75 increase in the mp830 since september, and a $20 increase in the ip4500 since September. The mp530 is slightly more stable being the same price, and the mp970 is actually somewhat less from September, unless you count the rebate detail.

The reason I went with a spare mp830 is because not only did canon release a new chip, they have a different model number for the european ink suggesting that we can't enable the CD-printing feature without having Euro or Asian chips. Also they shrunk the size of the cartridges without adding to the yield. I went with a spare mp830 as I already own the ip5200 and another mp830, and for me it made sense to have units that take the same head.

The Fry's deals in the link above are probably the best around if your in the US and near a Fry's store where you can use store pickup.
Yes, they are pretty good. The deal on the mp500 though, that's a referb. the mp530 from buy.com isn't and the price includes shipping. What was it $100-$103?

Cool deal on the mp970, though makes one wonder if one should shell out the moolah upfront and get the low price without a rebate, or gamble with the $100 rebate.

ip4500 though, that's one of the better prices I've seen since the 1st.

MP600.
Fry's rebates have been solid for me, they have even "fixed" one of mine that had a discrepancy in the barcode submittal.
Just grabbed an MP610 for cold storage.

I'll second that. Fry's Electronics will pay you the refund if you do not receive it after the waiting period for whatever reason. You need to have copies of all paper you submitted for the refund. Just bring those papers and they will quickly pay you if their record shows that you are eligible for it. Fry's offers tons of refunds all the time. They will give you the promised refund if you do not receive it through the mail. I think they will go after the vendor to get the money if the vendor did not mail it to you. They are willing to pay you out of their pocket first then eventually get paid by the vendor. I believe if the vendor fails to pay Fry's the vendor will be kicked out of Fry's.
