G1200, G2200, G3200, G4210, etc...This seems like a good way to go for someone who doesn't want to refill cartridges the way that most of us do.....and doesn't need the higher quality prints as from most photo printers. So, used as a daily use printer to print invoices, etc.

Do these printers hold up well? I understand that the printheads are replaceable, but haven't seen how much they cost?

Also, can 3rd party ink be used (without anything needed like resetting chips, etc)?

Thanks!
Fred

yes, there are several of these tank system Canon printer combos, and they do the job, you can compare these models with a similar series of ET...Ecotank printers by Epson. It all depends on your intentions and plans with such a printer - all these models are very convenient in terms of ink refill, no cartridges etc. Since the Canon bottled refill ink is already priced at a low budget level there should not be much a reason to look for 3rd party alternatives. Canon print quality is good to very good, but let me mention the limitations of these models, these are 4 color printers with 3 CMY dye inks and a pigment black for text print - on normal paper. That ink is not used for photo prints on glossy papers which creates some blacks getting a color cast in some cases, resolution and color saturation is otherwise on a good Canon level. So again, it's all about your intentions and expectations what you plan to print with such a unit. And there is another difference of these G-series inks compared to the otherwise used Claria inks - these G-series inks fade much faster when exposed to light and ozone , and 3rd party inks are even worse in this respect. So as long as you don't post your prints for a longer time on the wall etc there should not be a problem.
