Trying to catch up with the latest in multifunction printers as my sister wants to by a new printer. Further complicated by the fact that she is unlikely to want to learn how to refill carts and does not live near me :he

Some desirable features
  1. Scanning, printing and copying are needed.
  2. Does not have to Canon specifically
  3. Around £100 budget
  4. If not prepared to refill then best ink economy would be high on the list.

First thought was one of the smaller cart (1500) Maxify models, but the footprint and price may be too much, open to any suggestions.

Have you looked at the Pixma G MegaTank models? Smaller footprint, lower cost ink (IIRC) and easy to "refill". If you can, check one out at a brick and mortar store to see output.

Thanks @stratman - I did not know about them as not been keeping up with developments in ink printers for quite a while. She is not a high volume user but I can see that they would be more economical to run that some of the printers with tiny carts.

This Pixma G4510 if it is the same as your Megatank models then could be on the short list, albeit a bit outside the budget.

Can one use 3rd party inks in them?

As far as I know yes.

If you can, find one in a local brick and mortar store and look at the output. IIRC, mikling thought the ink was lesser quality than other Canon inks. I have no idea comparisons between the MegaTanks and Maxify's, but I am happy with my Maxify.

She is not a high volume user
Reconsider the Maxify - low initial cost printer and easily refillable. She probably would not need a refill for many months, possibly only once a year.

I think this might not be a good idea. This post and the following suggest that the "Yello Gello" trick is also used with the bottled yellow ink for the G series printers. And this suggests that a similar trick is used with the pigment black bottled ink.

You can flush a CLI-42 Y cartridge to get rid of the remnants of the original ink to avoid the formation of "Yello Gello", but I think it impossible or at least very difficult to flush the CISS system and modified sponge-and-print head tri-colour cartridge used as print head is the G series printers.
