Epson 7890 internal cleaner

There are a number of internal cleaning solutions on the market on can fill into empty ink cartridges to clean Epson k3 /Ultrachrome inks. Most of these solutions are priced in the stratosphere commanding $200 dollars or more per gallon. I am hoping someone knows the formula for making their own solution that is both safe and effective internally inside the Epson pro machines.

A thousand thanks for the info, is it safe to assume the isopropanol 99% is ok ?

I hear that rubbing alcohol has oils mixed in. For this reason I would stay away from rubbing alcohol.

@pharmacists’ solution is perfectly safe for both a cleaning solution and long term storage purposes...

I am finding a lot of food grade propylene glycol online, is this workable or is there another grade or type I should use???

That is the correct propylene glycol for inkjets..

Hi fineartphil,

that is the right grade of propylene glycol. You don't want to use the toxic ethylene glycol.

However, the formula for the conditioning/cleaning solution is a bit different from the preservation solution:

conditioning/cleaning:

3 % propylene glycol
20 % isopropyl alcohol (IPA), 99% should be OK if the 1% is just normal water and not some additive.
distilled water up to 100 %

For extra cleaning power (dried ink and pigment particles): ad 20-25 drops (equals about 1 ml) of concentrated ammonia to each 100 ml of conditioning/cleaning solution.

The preservation solution (for storing print heads) has a increased amount of propylene glycol (explained in the link given by The Hat):

20 % propylene glycol
20 % isopropyl alcohol (IPA)
distilled water up to 100 %

I cannot thank you enough, much gratitude my friend. Hopefully I can resurrect my 7890, it shows different clogged nozzles each time I run a nozzle check. I also misquoted the cost of cleaning solutions online, at last check a gallon tipped the scales at $500. Quite incredible as it is in line with the mega bucks Epson repair/ services.

Can you help me understand what is meant by "concentrated ammonia"? And where would I get that? I see you are in Belgium - I think these concentrations are different in Europe and the US.
