@James Barry, If you spread the bag of 3rd party chips out on a table, you can then note the code number on the back of each chip, each colour should have its own individual number, after checking each chip, stack the numbers in separate piles, then it’s only a matter of trial and error...
Each chip for each directing colour came in separate packaging so that (I hope) won't be an issue.

I suppose it would be possible to fit an off-size chip by sticking the chip on top of the cartridge, and then having a ribbon cable go from the contact points on the new chip with new contact points on top of the old chip (insulated from it). But it'd be fiddly work and I don't know if it's feasible to get the materials you'll need.

Well I agree it would be "fiddley" work but it may come to that point. The first thing I'm going to try is take one of my empty S and remove the OEM Chip, file/scrap/Cut-or somehow got the larger chip into the space and (it's beyond me) hope that the communication that was present with the OEM chip will continue with the new chip. If this ultimately fails I'll have to look into finding the smaller chips, or as you said solder fine wire to the new chip on top... Either way it will be a pain for one fill up. :-(

Using two identical needles and a vernier calliper I made some measurements on a HP364 XL cartridge. It seems the material thickness at the bottom of the ink chamber is around 2mm or 5/64", so trimming the bottom to fit the larger chip should be possible without ruining the cartridge. See this:

So ... In reality. It shouldn't make a difference (other than cleanliness) of the new larger chip in place of the smaller one, but to keep the contact patch as close as possible I think I still believe in the custom fit so it's tight and I can "Hopefully " get a good full read from the cartridge instead of an error message saying something is wrong with XY or Z.
