Clean off the three wipers to the eft of the purge "pads" with Q tips and windex.
A very tricky job! :) No matter how much I clean, they don't look any different from my vantage point.
So I just used cotton gloves with the finger tips dipped in windex. Blades look nice and clean now.

@jjohnl, as @turbguy has pointed out, cleaning up the wiper blades will help stop the build of ink on the underside of the print head, and using the higher ink setting on text and small print jobs can also cause a build up to occur after a bit of time.
What do you mean, "higher ink setting"?
Now back to your leaky cartridge problem, the one thing we didn’t cover was, how you do refill ?
Exactly as Mike says to in his instructions which, as I said, I re-check every time I refill.

Speaking of the wipers, if that's their job, isn't it appropriate that they should have ink on them?

Well, this has stopped being fun.
After 4 days with the carts sitting out of the printer and no leaks, I put the carts back, did a cleaning cycle and a nozzle check, which looked fine. Then I took the head out and looked at it and this is what I found. It was clean when I put it in; isn't it supposed to still be clean?

Yes, wipers collect excess ink from the print head and collect some ink in the process. Were the wipers "dirty" after your "fingertip" cleaning and after a cleaning cycle? They should have recollected some ink.

If they are still clean, perhaps the wiper system isn't functioning. That's not unknown if a return spring in the wiper mechanism has become dislodged...but that's a long shot. You might be able to observe them during a cleaning cycle by defeating the "cover lifted" switch.

I have no comment about the visual condition of the nozzle plates after a cleaning cycle, as I never have bothered to observe this...

Yes, the top edges are now inky.

I have replaced the M cart, the PM cart, and the printhead. Still, if the printer sits for a couple days the first half (more or less) of the first 8.5x11 print is red. Otherwise, prints are perfect. I'm going to go to OEM carts and see what happens.

The results should be perfect, once you have installed OEM carts.. ;)
