Or ARC carts that do read ink levels which I now understand most do not. Which I found out the hard way thru Ink Owl in spite of what their tech told me..
The specific carts I'm looking for are refillable PGI-5(BK) and CLI-8(C,M,Y,BK).

I did find these;
https://www.discountinkllc.com/prod...anon-pgi-5-cli-8-ip4200-ip3300-with-arc-chips
https://www.ebay.com/itm/192305827574

Both had this in the description; "New RCA Chip, show ink level." Not sure about the "RCA" part thou. ;)

In another thread, 'The Hat' recommended buying original Canon carts. In the past 18 or so years I have never bought a OEM cart and after looking at the prices I see way. Somewhere around $70 for a set of five about 4x the cost. o_O
Other than the actual ink, I'm sure they are probably better sponges, bu the cost? I need two sets (one to use, the other as the spare to change out faster).

Are all these carts using ARC chips now??

Don't use after market cartridges for refilling. Instead use genuine Canon PGI-5 and CLI-8 cartridges. You don't need to buy new expensive cartridges, you can use empty and never refilled cartridges AKA "Virgin Empty Cartridges" Such cartridges can be found at E-bay and other sites. See this.

After market cartridges can suffer from ink starvation and ink leakage and the ARC chips often get out of sync with the remaining ink amount in the cartridges. These things can all ruin the printhead, so it is strongly recommended to only refill OEM cartridges. With a resetter the refilled cartridges behave like new original cartridges if they are properly refilled.

The carts I have used were new, never filled, empty aftermarket carts, not ones that were filled with ink. Just like what you linked.

Unless I missed something here, I'm confused about buying empty used Canon OEM carts. I don't know how long the sponges were empty or almost empty.

If you reapply the orange clips on the emptied Canon OEM cartridges using rubber bands, the cartridges can be stored for years without the sponges drying out. Only buy cartridges with the orange clip attached, don't buy cartridges without the orange clips.

Here is a post showing cartridges with clips attached using rubber bands.

Understood about the clips I use them all the time, but most of these don't seem to have them including the example.

Here it is;
This auction was created for new or veteran refillers that are focused on the huge number of Canon printers that use 5 tank CLI-8 cartridges (BK,C,M,Y) and a single PGBK-5 Pigment Ink Cartridge. I have other auctions selling full 8 tank CLI-42 and 4 and 8 tank CLI-8 carts. This set also includes the Orange Storage Clip for the PGBK 5 cartridge which are rare to find.

We love our Canon printers but we hate that they run out of ink so fast and we have to pay a lot for each new cartridge. As soon as you replace one, another one goes out. An easy solution is to get educated on how to refill your own cartridges with quality ink using a tried and tested procedure.

For the CLI-8 / PGBK 5 cartridges, this starts with the highest quality dye inks from a place like Precision Colors or Octoink UK. They will advise you to get original Canon OEM cartridges with original chips and stay away from those leaky and poorly fitting compatible cartridges that have non re-settable chips. Further, their kit will show you how to prepare an OEM cart for refilling by using a difficult procedure to remove the "ball" from the cart, drilling the filler hole out to the perfect diameter for the rubber tab style plug that they want to sell you, and to tack on their orange storage clips for another dollar each.

Empty Canon original OEM CLI-8 cartridges are hard to come by now and Precision Colors stopped selling them so getting a complete set for refill purposes is a rarity. And finding sets that are already prepped and dried that include storage clips and plugs.... well, I'm the ONLY one selling such a set. And once I sell the limited amount of sets that I have, I will only be able to sell individual cartridges.

The filler ball has been removed, the carts have been expertly flushed to pristine white* and then all cartridges are dried to 13.6 grams or less. The filler hole has been drilled to 5/32" for accommodating the high quality rubber tab style "plug" which I provide for you and the orange storage clip is included to make it easy to do "mess free" filling and "stand-up" storage. You'll get 5 with this lot plus 5 tabbed style color plugs. A resetter has been used to reset these cartridges to full, but you are advised to acquire one for your own use. I have them available in my store.

Every cartridge in this lot has never been refilled, just flushed, drilled and dried. Every cart has it's original Canon CLI-8 OEM chip. In short, if you're interested in saving money by refilling your 5 tank Canon printer that uses CLI-8 / PGI-5 cartridges, I've done all the work for you. You'll find it's a lot easier to use your own ink from wherever you want to buy it from. These cartridges should last for at least up to 50+ refills or more each. I have CLI-42 carts that are still working fine after 60 refills so far.

If you're new to refilling or if you have been doing your own, this will get you an extra perfect set which are ready to go right now !

A lot of work went into prepping these perfect empty cartridges and doing it RIGHT, which YOU don't have to do. Please be sure to read the feedback on all of the others who have bought these from me so far. Over 550 of these units have been sold with zero returns. (referring to CLI-42 cartridges which I sell MAINLY) See my other auction for just the Orange Storage Clips, 8 in a batch and just the black or color filler plugs. Also, the more popular CLI-42 cartridge sets for the Canon Pro-100.

It should also be mentioned that these cartridges can be used for direct replacements to the CLI-42 sets - but you will need to remove the CLI-8 chips from these and substitute CLI-42 chips instead.

Be careful of those selling "compatible" cartridges that look like Canon OEM. They have erased out the Canon logo at the top. Compatibles do not fit well so they can leak and their chips cannot be reset. Beware also of those selling cart sets that have been refilled many times already. At some point, these may no longer absorb ink. Mine have NEVER been refilled so will have a much longer refill life.

One more thing. If you do buy these, you are expected to fully test and report back any problems within 30 days. After that time has passed, I cannot warranty any part of this set.

*Cyan and Photo Cyan may show a slight tinge of color in the cartridges at the sponge juncture. This does not affect their ability to perform perfectly when refilled. ("EU only" and "Setup" cartridges work in ALL Canon. They also hold the same amount of ink as "US" or regular cartridges) The PGBK Black Pigment Ink cartridge has a greyish color after flushing and drying. It will not arrive pristine white like the CLI-8 cartridges will. I have not found any solvent that will get pigment ink cartridges white. The cart will still take 3rd party ink and function perfectly. The PGBK cartridge you receive may be even less flushed than the one in the picture.

My documentation shows that the following printers all use (5) CLI-8 / PGBK 5 carts. Keep in mind that the chip included with this set are the originals and they have already been reset. Resetters are also sold in my store.{/quote]
