Canon Pixma IX6850
Hello.
I have a 4 year old Canon Pixma IX6850 which has a fault. It affects photo printing whereby any size print using various different quality photo papers comes out with a very heavy yellow tint and is completely unusable however I can successfully print colour documents OK. I have done all the obvious things to try and fix this, including replacing the print head, but without success. I have attached a copy of the nozzle check printout and I have also been in touch with Canon's service department who have given no clues - just advised me to send the whole printer to them for assessment but I suspect that any repairs plus shipping costs might well be more than a replacement which can be found for around £300 or so. I have a backup printer which copes well with up to A4 but I really would like to get the IX6850 up and running as the A3 capability is quite useful for my photography and when it works the print quality is pretty good. I have found a seller on Ebay who can supply a replacement motherboard but I'm just a little wary of spending out more at this stage especially if there's no improvement when I replace the board.
Any advice or suggestions would be most welcome.
Thanks.

Welcome to the forum, BobbyD.
very heavy yellow tint
There is an irreparable electronic failure of the print head, logic assay board or both. Electronic failure can propagate between these two components such that a damaged print head can "infect" the logic assay board and vice versa that an affects logic assay board can cause a failure in a new print head. This is a rare occurrence but keep in mind if you replace the logic assay board and then use the "new" (or old) print head.

replacing the print head, but without success.
Unfortunately your description of the issue is incomplete.
  1. Where did you get the new print head? Link please. Unless it was from an authorized Canon dealer you may have gotten a used one gussied up to appear like new in a counterfeit wrapper and box. Print heads that originate out of China are notorious for this. If you bought an advertised used one then these have higher rates of failure, too.
  2. Was there ANY change in issues with the new print head? If EXACTLY the same issues with the new print head then the problem resides in the logic assay board, unless you were so unlucky to get a "new" print head with exactly the same issue as the old one. (When pigs fly) Again, the new print head may have been irreparable damaged by the logic assay board and if used may propagate to the new logic assay board. Rare but has been reported. You will not know until you try.
  3. How do you know that the "new" logic assay board functions perfectly?

OK thanks for the reply. In response:
1- New print head came from CRC(taskron limited). Listed as Canon QY6-0086-000, original and new. Cost me £72.99
2- Yes there was a marked change in symptoms; originally I was getting completely blank results, the printer made all the right noises yet printed nothing at all. Once the print head was replaced I could print documents on plain paper but had the above described issues with the photo printing.
3- I don't. It's listed as working 'tested 100%' but that is a concern for me although returning it would appear to be a possible option.

I do lean toward biting the bullet and buying a new replacement printer though as replacing components could go on and on. I just thought I could try here in this forum first, as there are people like yourself who have a much greater depth of knowledge and experience than I, in the probably forlorn hope that there might be a cheaper solution.
Thanks again.

I reckon the old print head died and took out the logic board with it, and now that you have installed the new print head, it most likely has also been damaged by the logic board, Catch 22..

To continue you may need a new logic board and a print head to fix the printer.. Ouch..:(

They are an authorized Canon dealer/Service Center. They are trusted on the forum. Consider the print head new and never used.

Once the print head was replaced I could print documents on plain paper but had the above described issues with the photo printing.
Either you are the unluckiest owner of a brand new but damaged out of the box print head OR there is an electrical fault elsewhere, most likely the logic assay board but not guaranteed. Then there is the potential of an electronic failure being propagated to/from print head from/to the logic assay board. You will not know if the print head is still perfectly functioning until it is tried in an otherwise fully functioning printer. Most likely but who knows till you try.

Or buy a new printer and be done. It's only money. :hit

A side note: Canon Service Manuals in the past have recommended to their service techs to replace BOTH the print head and the logic assay board for certain problems. No fiddling around with testing and specific diagnosing, just replace the guts and be done.

Thanks to both of you for taking the time.
Yes I could go on for some time replacing head then board then head etc.
I could always try my replacement head in a brand new printer but knowing my luck it would then damage the board and I'd wind up with 2 complete printers which were faulty and unusable. I therefore will order a new printer and keep the old one for a while to play with and wait for another 4 years or maybe more for the replacement printer to clap out at which point I can swap out bits to my heart's content.
I've found a brand new one at £197, which isn't too bad really for an A3 printer, from Printerbase
As said, it's only money.😰
