I have replaced all my cartridges with a full set and now have a set of empty and half filled cartridges.

I've watched all the octoinkjet youtube videos and i'm clear about how to refill an empty cartridge (by syringing out the air).

What do I do when I want to refill a cartridge that is half full? Do I syringe out the ink (and air) or do I just go ahead and top up?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks!

I won’t go into the ins and outs of video instructions, but you can refill your carts by simply dribbling ink into the sponge till all the carts weights 32 grams each, but before you do that please remember to reset the chip first.. Do not remove any ink because it’s not necessary..

Thanks! Wasn't sure if the ink needed to be removed to ensure all the air was removed from cartridge but this is very helpful :)

The Hat and Jose agree.

While the following video is in the context of mass refilling, it must apply to refilling a single cartridge only.

Jose says you need to make sure the internal bag of an empty cartridge is collapsed or else dripping ink onto the sponge may cause problems, especially if the bag is not fully collapsed (Time = 3:35). He doesn't say what might occur, though we can guess.

Later on, he says you can do the dribble method without reference to removing air or not from the cartridge.

For normal refilling, I wouldn’t follow Jose’s methods at all, because he makes the whole thing look difficult, and the internal bag wont collapse unless an un-used cart is left without the orange clip for a long time, plus air floats so it will never be an issue with these carts..

I do not recall him explaining what the problem would be with either the drip or injection methods. This was the 5 second refill quicky video. Maybe he explains all in the full feature length video.

I would guess that with the injection method if you do not remove air from the cartridge first then at some point as you inject ink the air would be displaced from the cartridge along with some ink. Messy.

If the refilling contraption forms a complete seal then residual air compresses only so much and then the cartridge behaves as if full and no more ink can be injected. A good head of pressure in the cartridge would make for some Benny Hill hilarity when you remove the refill contraption and ink shoots out like Linda Blair projectile vomiting in The Exorcist.

That’s why I said he makes it all so completed, even you are confused by him..
There is no air in a just emptied cart.. The bag doesn’t collapse that quickly…

I suffered through watching the video more than once to make sure I understood what Jose did not say. (Unintended rhyme) The rest was hypothesis based on well-known physics of fluids and gases in enclosed spaces, like when you go to your pub.

The quantum states of cartridge bags I leave to you, sir.
