It's one of these guys. For an HP. Different than the more cube shaped ones. The bottom is an open circular opening with a sponge. I don't have an adapter to put a syringe on it to suck the ink through as you can do with the other cartridges but while refilling it the ink went through so it's full and open. I run a pic of all black to push the ink out and get barely any ink. Is the circuitry broken maybe? What's the trick here if any?

I cannot figure out how you refilled the cartridge. But top filling is a recommended refill method for these cartridges. Here is a post with an instruction. I cannot tell if the printing problems are caused by an electronics defect, but my guess is that it is a cartridge problem.

Thanks, but I popped in a new one and same issue so prolly printhead right? And it's the kind you gotta break into the dang thing to get to. Not fun but I got tools. This printer is worth it too.

If the problem is still there with a new OEM cartridge, then I think the printhead could be blocked. Could you upload a scan of a nozzle check or printer quality test print or what HP might call it?

Just about to go to sleep but I can tell ya it's not showing much either on the test. Three cartridges didn't work, two oem refilled, one non-oem brand new. Gotta be printhead. Found disassembly video on YouTube. Not that hard. Few screws, couple springs, ribbon cables. HP Photosmart 5520

Not necessarily. I Googled "HP Photosmart 5520 black not printing" and found a number of videos including flushing the print head without removing it, an excellent video on removing/replacing the print head, and an excellent long video on the purge system clogging with black ink and how to fix.

HP's own troubleshooting guidance on Black ink not printing, including how to soak the print head once it has been removed:

The nozzle check test - HP's Print Quality Diagnostic Report ? - is requested for very good reason. Sometimes the OP does not see discrepancies which the forum may pick up. Also, we are flying blind helping you. The more pertinent objective information obtained then the better for you. Please print out the test, scan, crop and upload for us to see.

Here ya go. Thanks. I didn't refill the color ones but I'm they look like they're salvageable, like they're working so just focusing on black for now. You can see with my own test sheet there's no black

Thank you for posting the test page. There is a lot going on with the test print out and worth posting for all to see.

While Black is certainly the worst, the CYM cartridges are not a guarantee and should be either refilled or new ones purchased. I'm not sure why you haven't done this yet if you refill and have ink on hand. You have issues across the all cartridges. Refilling them may help you rule in or out if Black is or is not your only problem.

Additionally, HP uses thermal print heads which heat up the ink before it is spit out onto the paper. The ink serves as a coolant for the heated nozzle so nozzles do not irreparably burn out. With Canon inkjets, the nozzle test will not ruin its thermal print head nozzles. Since the HP equivalent test page is much more than a Canon nozzle check, I am not sure you risk permanent damage. This outside my area of knowledge.

Fill or replace all the cartridges now as precaution. Do not print anything else at this time except for the test page. If you plan on first flushing the print head and/or cleaning out the purge system then do that first before anymore printing. But get your cartridges filled or bought before any further printing or anything at all.

So print test page after refilling color inks THEN do system "purge"? I'll have to check the videos you linked above. Thanks...

So print test page after refilling color inks THEN do system "purge"? I'll have to check the videos you linked above. Thanks...
1) The Black cartridge that is completely missing is a Pigment ink. Maybe it is a clog in the print head. Maybe it is a clog in the purge system. It can be an empty Black cartridge or lack of ink flow through the cartridge for whatever reason. Do not refill the old cartridge as you cannot be sure if the cartridge is the problem or not at this point. Get a new Black cartridge, which you said you have.

2) The black text and lines in the test page you posted use CYM to make Black. These appear to be Dye-based inks. There are missing and off color text and lines. This can be due to insufficient ink in the cartridge, poor ink flow through the cartridge, and/or variable print head clogging.

The funnel-shaped missing ink best seen in the Cyan and somewhat in the Magenta are classic signs of ink starvation in a Canon inkjet. I'd bet it is the same for your HP since they are similar thermal print head inkjet printers. The straight lines of missing ink typically represent clogged nozzles in the print head. Maybe this correlates to your HP.

These findings are precisely why we ask for a nozzle check. It tells us more than what you said.

I might be tempted to pull the print head and flush and soak it. Then install new cartridges and only print the test page to see what happens. Post the results. Do not print anything else unless you get a perfect result. If the CYM colors reappear properly but not the Black then you may need to do the purge system cleaning. But that is based on my limited reading on your printer. Use Google like I recommended and read as much as you can stand on your specific issue.

And, yes, you should look at the videos as they may offer some insights into your issue(s).
