I am using Canon IP7270 (Asia model) printer. Due to ink cartridge cost issue, I need this printer set to IP7220 ( America model) so that I can use PGI-250/CLI-251 instead of PGI-750/CLI-751 ink set. As I know, we can do this thru service mode to change it. Is any one can teach me thru it. Thank you!

Region change of the printer can be done. but is no simple task and a firmware upgrade or a service tool won't do it. You need to rewrite some firmware code in the EEPROM on the logic board. See this thread.

The identity of the cartridges is in the chip. Attaching a PGI-750/CLI-751 chip to a PGI-250/CLI-251 cartridge will change the American cartridge into an Asian one. You will also need a resetter for the Asian cartridges, Else you change a new American cartridge into a used or empty Asian one. See this for chip transfer.

How about refilling to save money?

Appreciate the comment and suggestion.

I found from web that if I can download this Canon Service Tool V5103 and run it, I can direct change my print to USA region. Is this correct?

Yes and no! The region change from service mode will not change the region of the needed cartridges. What will be changed is the default paper format, paper dimensions in metric or imperial measures and similar. With older printers the region setting also determined if CD printing was allowed or not, due to patent issues. US printers "were told" they were European and CD printing was unlocked. IIRC a side effect of this region change was that the default plain paper format was changed to the European standard A4.

It is also important that you use a service tool of version 4720 or newer for service mode operations. Using an older service tool like v3400 will cause lock of service mode, so you can't later reset the absorber counter.

I once found a service tool v5103 for free download. It didn't work, I couldn't do any reset but luckily it didn't do any harm either.

Learn a lot from you, Peter.
Surely will not do that. As "The Hat" said, change the chipset to the origin I am living is the way to go.

If you mean by "chipset" the individual chip on the cartridges then yes. You will need to swap the chip on the cartridges you currently use to new cartridges you buy after your move to a different region than your printer is sold in. In other words, the cartridge chip must be of the same region as the printer's internal programming/EEPROM/chipset is.

The easiest way around this is to use a chip resetter if there is one for your cartridges. Have two sets of cartridges and reset and refill them. Be aware that a cartridge's chip can fail without warning or apparent reason. Your ability to source new chips for your cartridges, or the whole cartridge with chip on it, may be costly if you move to a new continent.

An alternative to a chip resetter is to buy ARC chip, either attached to aftermarket refillable cartridges or as single unit you attach to your own cartridges. Alibaba Express may be a good source if you cannot find in your own country.

FYI - if possible, it is recommended you use OEM Canon cartridges for refilling regardless of what chip is on them.

You are right. I am thinking to buy a resetter and ARC for that. Thanks for the helpful suggestion!

It is either a resetter for "single use" chips on store bought cartridges or ARC chips that reset themselves when you take the cartridge out of the print head and then reinsert it.

Each method is independent of the other and not meant to be used together.
