Sounds like your bandwidth is saturated and/or the buffer on the printer is waiting on more data. This is an odd printer, I checked the specs, and is there truly not a wired Ethernet port? Anyway, USB is best for a number of reasons, status messages for one, and hella fast throughput for the other. I, like others, have extended USB connectivity without issue. One thing I have done for my WiFi network is to create a separate subnet at 5GHz and control what devices have access to that VLAN. Might be an option depending on your WiFi gear vendor.

When joining USB cables together you can use many different connector types (Bootstrap), but the best ones to use are hubs that are powered, because they will extend the power output indefinitely allowing you to place a printer anywhere within a building 50 metres plus..
Place a powered hub at every cable junction..

some folks have mentioned a powered hub... I'm curious, where does the power come from? A couple of double A's or something?

Power from two ports is one way to power the hub. Another and more common way is to use a 5 V mains adapter. Here is a 4 port hub intended for use with laptops that can be powered either from a split cable, the black plug is for the signal and the red plug is for additional power, or instead of getting power from the split cable the mains adapter can be used.

Edit: You probably meant batteries with "A couple of double A's or something?" and not two type A USB ports. I have never seen a battery powered USB hub.

Actually I never liked wifi connection for printers. If possible, I always use ethernet connection for maximum connectivity and reliability. Bad connection with wifi can cause you a lot of headache.
