I was thinking of making a new standard lamp in the old style and the full height too, it will be a challenge and if it succeeds, I’ll be over the moon.
light type2.PNG Latern type...light size.PNG This shape and dimensions...

I am going to use all black filament this time and start at the bottom and work up, instead of making individual pieces willy nilly, when I reach the height I require, I’ll then try to design the lanterns, and get them to fit.

I’m hoping to hang 3 lanterns from the centre shaft by using a half circle curve and attaching the lanterns from the top to hang down, this of course is all speculation, what I end up with is going to be anybody’s guess.

It’s not going to be easy and will take quite some time firstly to design it, then print it, and I reckon the printing time for the base of the lamp will be in excess of 72 hours using as much as 1kg of filament.

If I can make the design to fit on my CR-10 maximum 30 x30 x30cm and can finish the print without over stressing the poor Auld machine will be interesting because I reckon this project will take about 200 hours to complete and use around 4kg plus of filament...

I am hoping to print the base in one go without the need for 1 or more prototypes, but I’ll need several attempts at getting the vertical shafts to fit snuggly, plus another half dozen goes at making the light holders (Lanterns), then cutting the glass to fit them, not to mention the curved hollow tubing....

Is this a bridge to far...Only time will tell all...?

O’ don’t expect this project to be finished any time soon, if I can complete it in six months then I’ll be doing well if at all, because I have another life, as I’m being constantly reminded by the powers that be..

P.S. is there anyone out there doing anything on their 3D printers at all, everyone seems to have gone quiet of late....

Weren't these Victorian Era street lamp posts made from cast iron? Maybe plastic wont be strong enough for a full size replica without some reinforcing? I think making it hollow to hold a steel pipe for strength would be a good idea.

You’ve got me on that one @PeterBJ, because I simply don’t know, I am hoping my shaft at 10cm diameterand 5mm thick will be sufficient, plus I am aware that this design will catch the wind more. (Top heavy)
I wonder if the Victorians would have used plastic if it had been around at that time, but they tended to make things very bulky back then, so maybe not...

Once the base is complete I may look at the thickness issue again, as this is an on going project it is subject to many changes, the base is in its final stages and almost ready to print.. It’s huge...
It will have 6, 10mm bolt holes for mounting in concrete and a foot print of 280mm, The bottom anchor plate itself is 3cm thick with 40% fill...

Thanks PeterBJ...

I have been rethinking my standard lamp idea again and figured if I’m going push the boat out without oars, I might as well learn to swim a little bit.

I came up with this idea to copy a well-known landmark in Dublin, it may not be an exact double, but it should have the same characteristics of the original visually, it will be more of what I can achieve rather than how it will eventually look..

I’m planning on leaving the water fount on the bottom out.. I’m not that Friggin crazy..

Just an update...

This current lamp project is progressing nicely, as I design each piece I print a small section of the piece to make sure they fit together snugly, the lantern itself is proving somewhat difficult, but not impossible.

There’s one major thing that has cropped up dough, after I’d bought 6 rolls of black filament..
Question: will the lamp standard suffer from the effects of UV light and begin to warp or sag, because the white filament has no such worries.

It’s going to look mighty strange if the Feckin section holding the lanterns up start to go out of shape, like Mr. soft..

There’s a long way to go yet, before I commit to print..

On going up-date...
With everything going on around here, (All sorts of issues) I finally got a chance to start my first print on the lamp standard. We’re going to have a power outage later this morning for necessary upgrade work.. so it just finished in time..

P1010492.jpg This is on 300 x 300 platform, size wise ?..
It took 81 hours to complete and 390 metres of filament but in the end it looks the business, it did take time to print but it was well worth the wait, I just hope the rest of it will print without any issues. This was the biggest section..
Untitled-1.jpg She's a real beauty..
I am still designing the upper parts of the lamp and it will take some time before I’m ready to commit any of it to print, at least I’ve got the centre pole section to be going on with.. All these parts are huge...

Sometimes I reckon I’m crazy...
