B200 dilemma on MP980, 3 options, any other ideas ?

been a while since i've posted, hope all on this forum are doing well

here's my situation. i have an MP980 that is giving me a B200 w 10 flashes. looks like print head high temp error. this is for a 980 i gave to a nurse and i maintain/refill for her.

most likely it's a burned out print head, but also may be the logic board.

here is what i have to work with:
- have no new print heads but has an old previously working one that was marked "grey flaky"
- have new MP980

looks like i have 3 options:
- try flaky PH in old 980 (This one)
- try B200 PH in new 980
- try flaky PH in new 980

i've already tried soaking/cleaning the B200 PH, but still giving me the B200 error

any thoughts, options or other things to try ?

thx

J

B200 is an electronic print head failure, so it cannot be cleaned away. A print head that has failed electronically might but does not always damage the printer's motherboard. A motherboard that has been damaged in this way might damage a new or other print head.

So I would not try the B200 print head is the new MP980.

What is the error with grey in the flaky print head? If the grey band in the nozzle check is split horizontally at the middle and one half is lighter than the other or missing it is an electronic failure, and the print head should not be installed in a printer I think. If the error is clogged nozzles or fuzziness in grey print I think the print head is OK to use for testing in the old MP980.

If the flake print head works OK in the old printer, and continues to work for a couple of days, you might start looking for a new print head. AFAIK grey is only used for photo printing and if the printer is used for office work you might continue the flaky print head.

If you decide to unpack the new MP980 I strongly recommend that is is not used for testing defective or flaky print heads but only used with the new print head.

These are my recommendations, others might have other ideas. It might be a good idea to hear more than one opinion.

I’d go with option one, try the flaky Print head in the MP980 printer for a while and then revert back to the B200 head again, sometimes a change of head can cause a reset in the EPROM and then it forgets to give the error again.

This can work for a short/long time but the B200 will return the next time the printer gets to stressed printing a dozen or so sheets, causing the head to heat up and cause the same error to occur.

I wouldn’t be too concerned about the logic board with these two print heads, but all the same, I wouldn’t test either of these heads in your new printer..

Good luck Jimbo..

good ideas from 2 of the most knowledgeable on this forum.

the flaky PH grey is a pull from 2015, of course my notes were not that helpful, only said gray was flaky.

to complicate matters i have a 980 that i use for prints, so i'd like to possibly keep the new 980 in case my 980 goes.

will give option 1 a shot:
- flaky PH in old 980

if that does not work, may have to reach into my batch of spares for the nurse and break out either a new MX700 or IP4500 for her. i have carts already drilled from my MP830 days.

Agree with @PeterBJ on trying Old Flaky and not using the new printer, your printer, or the B200 print head except in the scenario The Hat mentioned (swapping B200 with flaky if flaky works)

If you do get the print head to function again, there appears to be a significant likelihood it will malfunction again permanently.

if that does not work, may have to reach into my batch of spares for the nurse and break out either a new MX700 or IP4500 for her.
How about a Maxify? They are refillable and seem durable. If photo printing is important then probable want a different printer.

update:

- tossed out B200 PH

- put flaky PH into old 980
- nozzle check(NC) showed missing grey and photo BLACK
- after several cleanings, still have missing grey and photo BLACK

- removed good PH and carts from my working 980, put in old 980 and got perfect nozzle check

so looks like i need a new 980 PH(genuine canon) to get the nurse back printing on old 980

will try soaking the flaky PH but not expecting much there

thx for all the help guys !

If the printer is not used for photos you can mask the electric contacts of the grey and photo black on the flaky PH.
No current will run through the damaged nozzles and the printhead (and the motherboard) will live longer.

You can print office documents in B/W and even color this way.

update:

well my printer hoarding addition from nearly 10 years ago may have had some benefits

in the event that i can not find a genuine 980 PH i decided to review my "pile" of stored backup printers up in the attic.

i found the new 980 whose PH i had already used, but then found another new 980 box that was sealed with a new 980 PH.

so now i need to decide whether to:
1. put new 980 PH into the nurse's 980 to get her back printing
2. save the 980 PH(last one i have) for my 980 when it needs a new PH, then give nurse a new MX700(of which i have 2)

the flaky PH is still soaking, will give that a go in a few days, but do not have high hopes.

not sure if anyone remembers this deal, but when canon was unloading its refurbished MP980s, they offered them for $36 shipped.

given my printer hoarding addiction i grabbed 5 at that time.

If you are going to give her the new print head then why not give her the new printer as well since you already have a spare 980 body waiting in storage?

Speaking of storage, I smiled when I read that you eventually found another boxed 980 in the "pile". Awesome. How many printers do you have stowed away that you did not see the 980 on first perusal? :D

the 980 is a photo printer(6 inks) that we use here to print out a lot of photos, so would like to keep that going for years to come.

the nurse prints out mostly text, some cards and has a tendency to run her ink carts dry, keep printing and then fry the PH.

since i have 2 MX700s(4 inks), all in one, w ADF, it might be better for her.

like most addicts, i hide my addiction, wife has no clue how many spares i have. i keep them in hidden an attic over the garage that has only enough room to crawl. the printer boxes are pushed back onto each other so can't see them unless you crawl up there and dive in. i dove in yesterday....

most of these are canon refurnished(R), they come fully taped up, with new print heads, new carts, cords, manuals, etc. bought them for prices like $36, $49, $59, $69, $79, $89.

since discussing your addiction is a part of the cure, here goes:

spare printers as of 01/21/19:
- downstairs: 1 IP4500
- garage attic: 2 MX700s (canon refurbished)
- garage attic: 2 MX860s (new)
- garage attic: 2 MX860s (canon refurbished)
- garage attic: 2 MP980s (canon refurbished) 0 print heads left
- garage attic: 3 MX870s (canon refurbished)

there i feel better already

sometimes i think i should sell some, whole or part them out

thoughts ???
