I have been living in the world of dial up and windows XP for so long it is going to be difficult to change.

My next question is about cable connecting to the new computer tower. The few people I know all have laptops with built in wifi and they use a router.

What kind of card do I need to buy to connect this desktop to cable?
This new computer has 4 empty slots

You will need no additional cards. The cable connects to the Ethernet port to the right of the USB 2 ports on the back of the computer.

Probably irrelevant to this discussion but I swapped to Mac OS in 2010 - never looked back and I had worked with Win from the very first version. I started off with an Amstrad 1640 and DOS. Eight years I have had the iMAc now and its still fast after many OSX updates.

May I ask why you have disabled log on credentials? I sure hope your system is never hacked. By not having some kind of logon security in place, you are opening up a whole can of worms.....

To whom are you referring too.. ?

The Optiplex 7010 is a business computer and the log in page I am talking about is only to prevent coworkers from looking at or messing with your stuff. Since I am a senile old man living alone I don’t need to sign in every time I turn the computer on.

Protecting the computer from the internet is another can of worms I have not looked at yet.

Windows 10 has a built in firewall and internet security with Windows Defender. Is Defender good enough or should you use a third party security application?

I use Norton Security. Some use a free third party application. The above link has a link to a web site that tests security applications several times a year and displays results. This may help guide you in a decision.

FYI: The US government forbids use of Kasperky on government computers because it is Russian made.

No matter what you decide I would install the free version of Malwarebyte (and the free CCleaner for other reasons than security) as the above article discusses. If you do become infected, Malwarebytes may be able to get you out of a bad jam as well as assist in removing malware.

Its strange you bring up Malwarebytes back in 2014 I purchased a lifetime membership Golden ticket. After purchasing the membership I discovered their software could not be down loaded by slow dial up.

Now I can’t even access their web page because of my slow dial up. I plan on sending them a letter to find out if my lifetime membership is still good.
