Hi everybody! I thought it would be fun to give some info and background about me!

  • What printers do you currently have (manufacturers / models): Canon i560 & Brother MFC-7440N... plush 3 (yes THREE) unopened refurbished i560's that I got at Fry's for $39!!
  • What printers have you owned in the past:TONS! ;) My first printer ever was a dot matrix on an old Mac about 30 years ago that our family owned. It took paper with "tear off" hole feeding ribbons on either side and it was SUPER loud! My first printer was an old HP DeskJet 500 C. Later in college I had a Canon BJC-1000. I've also had a bunch of HP LaserJets (LJ 4, 4plus, 5P, etc.), a handful of different Canon inkjet models, a Lexmark inkjet, and a couple different Brother laser printers.
  • If you had one wish, which printer would you want: A 3-D printer!!! (Which I now have: Creality CR-10
  • What experiences do you have with refilling and/or tinkering with printers:I first tried refilling my family's HP DeskJet 500 C with very mixed results... mostly bad and gave up. Years later I got a Canon BJC-1000 and decided I'd try refilling again... this time I had AMAZING success! I could put almost any liquid in that thing and it would print and never clog. It worked like an amazing champ! The biggest downside wwas that the tri-color carts didn't hold much ink. Later I got a Canon i560 and LOVED it (still my favorite). I've also refilled all my laser printers with mostly great success. For a short spell in 2000 I bought bulk empty Lexmark carts, refilled at home, and resold on eBay.
  • Any other info you'd like to share about your education, work, or hobbies: My education background is business/finance. My work background is in client services / online advertising. My hobby background is too diverse... so much so that I put much of my interests on my site (former home of this forum) here: www.Nifty-Stuff.com. I also own a bunch of forums and websites which you can see here: www.RobLudlow.com/portfolio/

Hi. Thank you for sharing your personal/background history. I am trying to locate the 'ink absorber' on my Canon MP210. Is it located in the front and down low?

Thanks for the overview - most forum/question/answer sites don't do this, and it's a good thing to know who's at the helm.

This is the first place I've found to ask questions about printers for free and get advice beyond the painfully obvious (such as, "Try calling the manufacturer" or, "Take the little piece of tape off the ink cartridge"). Thanks for making it available to the huddled masses of us stuck in hand-to-hand combat with our printers!

I am on my 3rd brand of printer. FIRST: Lexmark-Sounded like a bucket of bolts, worked fine. Vista came along, no driver. SECOND: HP cheapo. Worked OK, the print spooler kept jamming. They replaced it. Same thing. THIRD: Canon PIXMA iP3600. Worked fine for 3 years. It died. Bad power supply. Called Canon----"we don't sell parts for that printer". THAT'S NOT WHAT I WANT TO HEAR FROM THE PEOPLE THAT SOLD ME THE PRINTER. Now what? I refilled a few cartridges. They mostly worked.

Hello there again.I am Greek living in Athens.
My printer history has many common things with others,i guess.
My first printer was a cheap Canon, around 1997, which lasted for short time-the repair cost was equal to buying a new one-so i left it at Canon service, did not bother to take it back.
Having become wiser,my second printer, around 2000, was a rather expensive HP model, with photo quality printing. That lived longer than the Canon but, computers were fast developping as well as OS,so my PC Windows went obsolete, and, together with a Dell laptop windows XP, i bought a HP all-in-one Deskjet 6310.Its printing and overall quality -was adequate. Its only problem was the ink(one black, one triple colour),most annoying to throw away half full cartridges.Until....one day my wife lifted it to clean underside---the cover hinges broke..Repair cost...forget it.
Then ,even more wise,i said: Separate inks, dedicated (no covers) photo higher end printer. So,in 2004,I got the Canon pixma iP 6000D which i have to the present.
This printer gave me ,for 12 years, complete satisfaction.
Excellent photos (maybe 3000 10X15cm,100 A4),more than 15.000 A4 black text.Very seldom, almost never, needed cleaning, shallow or deep,or anything else. The ink was original Canon for the 2 photo cartridges (photo cyan+photo magenta),and 3rd party half price Plaisio for the 4 common other colours (mag, cyan, yell, black).A faithful delight.
The machine, two years ago,(when it was 10 years in use) gave me the first trouble: Alarm blinking,Blotters full, need to replace or clean.
I took the machine to Canon Greece, they told me it was too old and they could do nothing, except stop the alarm and print a "status" page (charged me 10 Euros) and warned me the ink might overflow anymoment or even the head could "explode". I could n't find any other repair shop either. Also the blotting pads were impossible or dirty expensive (50Euros) to buy.
Thanks to the internet and since I loved this printer,i opened it,extracted the thick-like-towells blotters, washed and dried them and reinstalled them. All run fine up to now, that is 2 years after that repair.
Today it seems my dear printer has reached its end.It doesn't print at all--page comes out white.
I guess now that the correct thing to do is to let it rest.
Guess i "l have to get a new one ,what about Canon TS 8050.
That's it for now, thanks for anyone reading.

Welcome to the forum, sds. Excellent story, one that many of us can appreciate having lost trusty printers as well.

I do not know the TS8050, but Moderator @The Hat recommends Canon Maxify as a durable printer with good quality output. As always, what you want to do with the printer, and your bank account, guides which printer to purchase.

I have had on again off again relationships with a long history of disposable printers. I also remember the dot matrix tractor feed printers.
I have a 12 year old Brother B&W laser, that refuses to die.
My late first ex wife gave me a Canon Pixma Pro 9500 Mk11, it was new in the box, she got sick before she had a chance to unpack it.
I am a photographer, since I was in my 20's. Back in the day I had a couple of local photo labs that knew more about color than i will ever know. They kept a file of my negatives, and sample prints. So all i had to do was, call with a file number and pick it up the next day.
I always developed ad printed my own B&W.
It took me a week and some, to figure out how to get the colors on my screen to predictably look like what was on the out put of the printer.
I buy Franklin Inks from Amazon, Canon wanted $20 a pop for carts, and that was not going too happen.
No doubt if I knew what I was doing my prints would look even more amazing.
I have a bunch of questions.
Thanks in advance for your patience
Paul
