Hi Guys

I had a couple of carts to flush out last night, one was a Magenta the other was a Yellow.. now I
know the practice is to dump the Yellow cartridge, and use the chip in another cart (cleaned out)
to act as the new Yellow.
But all the same I thought I would have a go at cleaning it.. I flushed it out with water ( I know I
aint got to do that ?) then I soaked it over night with " pharmacy's formula " (also done the same
with the Magenta one) so today I continued cleaning them out, first with plenty of water using the
octoink cleaning method, then I finished them off with plenty of distilled water !

To my surprise the Yellow one has cleaned out to a perfect white, like brand new.. the Magenta one
has a very very slight stain, hardly noticeable !
I have them drying out, and shall be re filling them, the Yellow one i'm confident that it will be okay..

What do you think...

@Geoff69, your method certainly worked, but I reckon you still should have started with Window cleaner first on the yellow carts, then pharmacist solution, but seen as your using OctoInkjet yellow then it shouldn’t be a problem, just keep a good eye on it.

Use the wick dry method to aid you in the drying out process and don’t forget to reset the chip before refilling, and always remember patients is the key to proper refilling, and please try not to take anymore shortcuts.

The history of OEM yellow needs to be taken seriously, because mixing it with water can cause it to turn into an invisible gel, which in turn with work its way into the print head causing you poor printing results...

I would have used windex window cleaner (I presume that's what you ment) but its not available in this country (UK) but i'm happy with the method I have been using so far..
I do realize the importance of the yellows, I contacted topink24 last year regarding there yellow mixing with OEM yellow, they assured me its fine !

Thanks for your drying advice, however I have flushed & filled quite a few carts now and do use the drying method explained.

Windex is window cleaner with Ammonia, so another window cleaner with Ammonia should be OK to use.

If I bought some window cleaner and added my own Ammonia, wouldn't I end up with a similar mix to the pharmacist solution that I have already got ?

I think so. Pharmacist's cleaning solution with Ammonia might also be suitable.

The problem of finding a European alternative to Windex has been discussed before. See this thread.

My favourite window cleaner is an Ajax window cleaner with Ammonia from Colgate-Palmolive. I think it is #2 on the list in the first post in the thread linked to. I don't know if the product is available in the UK.

The bottle looks like this in Denmark:

I ordered Windex-D from Amazon for trying to "unclog" an ix6550 Print Head… it's the genuine product, meaning I had it shipped to UK, for cheap as chips. However, upon further research it is probably that this 'Ammonia-D' contains such minuscule amounts of actual Amonia that I also ordered pure (hardcore) "burn-holes-through-your-nose-if-inhaled" Ammonia for good measure.

Anyways, having finally just gotten stuck into refilling my Pro-100 OEM carts for my first time ever just recently. I do love this Octoink very much, I can't wait to buy the big bottles next time!

And this brings me to the same situation, as not not all carts have been refilled, I am set on flushing the OEM CLI-42 like yourself and NOT using the CLI-8 from who knows where it comes from…

YES I hope to flush it out as good as you mention (having ever flushed a cart yet). Here's my justification…

If what we have heard is so true regarding 'Yellow Jello' gunk developing over time which is why we would not want anycresidue whatsoever left over of OEM Yellow before adding 3rd Party Inks why is it I have yet to hear any explanation regarding the OEM Yellow still having masses of "trace" inside the Print Head itself regardless of there being any left over in the Cartridge.

Afterall, isn't that where gunk blockage is supposed to occur? Inside the Print Head? So say we do use a CLI-8 instead? There is STILL OEM Yellow within the Print Head!??

After a long thought I have had a complete turnaround.. although I cleaned the Yellow cart nice and clean with the method mentioned above, I have had second thoughts, I have
dumped all my Yellow carts, after first taken off the chips, its not worth the risk just for the sake of a empty cart costing £2.50 ! also saving hassle cleaning out a print head !
I have ordered a stack of empty CLI 42 carts, so I will be modifying some new Yellows.. I was just wondering what colour ink cleans out the best, I have had Black clean out as
white as snow !
We'll see..

Don’t go and waste all your good efforts at cleaning the yellow carts, if you’re still a bit worried then start again, and leave the carts soaking in some Window Cleaner for a couple of day and that should relay any of your fears, hard water can be more harmful...

The Yello Gello won’t destroy your print head, it can only clog some of the nozzles up for a while but with continued use, it will clear up once again...

P.S. If anyone is thinking of using pure Ammonia, then think again, it should only be used in very small dosage, like 1 to 2% and don’t leave anything soaking longer than 6 hours...

You are my man! I have spent a while hunting sources for flushing out carts and there are not that many out there (I don't have one of those massive syringes that I see being used, but yes I do have Windex-D)
I am thinking of just plain filling the OEM Yellow Cart with OctoInk Yellow and see how we go. Besides, one source mentions it took them YEARS before the 'Gello' showed up. Maybe I am willing to take my chances, the new Pro-100S has an extended 2 year warranty on it. I may or may not flush, but I don't plan on switching out chips and using the CLI-8.

I take full responsibility!
