Today I took delivery of a refurbished P800 purchased from Adorama.

I was going through the set up process and reached the section where I was to install the inks and initialize the charging of the ink delivery system. Well about 30 seconds into this process I got this message:

"Printer error. Turn the power off and on again. For details, see your documentation.
Error Code 0x1414 "


Is anyone here familiar with this error code? Especially at the very beginning of the setup process? I'm new to epson printers so I have no real idea what to do. I called Epson but they told me to call back tomorrow(!) to speak with someone about whether or not they can replace it.

Please help, if possible!

Epson is exchanging the unit for me. That seems to be the only way to resolve this error message on a new unit short of swapping out all of the cartridges in hopes of finding smoking out the bad one.

The issue is that there is an adjustment that needs to be precisely performed. This adjustment could have bee set improperly to start with ( just at the edge of acceptable) and then drifted or sometimes, the adjust happens to fall back into acceptable when the printer is restarted.....only to reappear at the worst of times. This can be fixed by a qualified technician.

I got my machine exchanged at the Epson service center where the tech told me to remove the OEM carts and Maintenance tank and keep them. Epson throws those out when refurbing the machine anyways. So those should be retained. It is up to Epson if they will replace it with a refurbed unit. In my case the tech helped me get a new unit replacement as it was up to him to make that call. I purchased mine as a new unit.

I was told by Epson's customer support person over the phone that when I receive the replacement unit that I am to keep the carts. However, they didn't mention the maintenance tank. I'm being given a refurb printer to replace my refurb unit. That seems fair to me. I obviously have no problem with refurbished.

The replacement printer arrived today and I am in the process of setting it up. So far I've made it past the point where the previous printer was throwing the error message. Fingers crossed.

I do have a question: As I mentioned previously, I was told to hold on to the starter carts that cam with the first printer. Now that I've swapped them out, is there a way to store them for further use or are will I not be able to use them at all? I'm sure one (or more of them) may not work but am willing to try if it means I now have a nearly full set of useable ink.
