Agree with websnail. Just refill what you need now and leave the rest purged and dry. It is OK if the sponge gets completely colored. What you don't want is ink above the sponge where it could clog up the air vent above. If the ink does not appear to be accepted readily enough by the sponge, either let the cartridge sit for a day or two or, if you are using the German method, squirt some ink along the bottom of the sponge to prime it as you withdraw the needle. If you find a problem with ink starvation from a poorly absorbent sponge then give pharmacist's conditioning solution.

Thank you ever so much for this advice. I'm grateful to all the posters here, but you and websnail have truly hung in there with me with your enduring patience through I'm sure some fairly dumb questions. I'll have to admit though, this is really fun. When I've done my first SUCCESSFUL refill, hope you don't mind if I shout from the roof tops. Trust me, you will hear me.

I propose a new drinking game... any time uncle The Hat's name is invoked we take a drink. Anytime uncle refers to one of us, that person has to chug their whole drink.
