I have an Epson 2200 that I would like to put into long term storage.

Is there a method to clear out the carts to flush the print head before I unplug it? Would I need to purchase some special cleaning carts or cleaning fluid. Usually I just use Windex.

If there's a cheap easy way to clean it out, I'd be grateful for any tips.

Thanks!

All of them! LOL
What I did with one of my 3 Epson 2200s was to inject piezoflush directly into the print head ink stems. Thus pushing out all existing from each channel. It's been sitting without carts for more after flushing the print head out and I guarantee it will ready to go when needed.
You should not store the printer with carts loaded with anything with ammonia. Ammonia is OK for temporary uses to clear out clogs, not for point term storage of printers

Preservation solution for print head for long term storage:

20 parts propylene glycol
20 parts isopropyl alcohol (=isopropanol)
60 parts of destilled water
