CLI-221 carts use different ink than CLI-8? Use same ink in both ok?

I'm thinking of getting a CLI-221 based all-in-one. My expectation had been that the CMYK ink would be the same as used in my 9000-2 and iP4500 printers that use CLI-8 carts, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I looked up the ink codes, and they were different. I'm reluctant to have two complete sets of ink if they are close enough to use interchangeably. My image quality expectations from the AIO aren't that high. However, I don't want to mess up the AIO by using an inappropriate ink that could add to possible clogging or ink-flow problems.

Specifically,, I'd like to use OCP ink for CLI-8 carts from RJetTek in the CLI-221 carts. Anyone done this ... with what results? I asked RJetTek, but they were kind of vague on results ... just that the colors might look a bit different ... maybe.

Have people with both types of printers (CLI-8 based and CLI-221 based) used inks from other vendors and found them different? Still compatible enough to be interchangeable?

Try it. You can always purge the new carts and refill with the updated correct ink if the results aren't good. Not much to lose trying.

You already know how fast and good your iP4500 is--why not get an AIO that uses the same print head--the MX850. I'll bet you can find one on craigslist in your area sometime in the near future.

Agree ... but I've been watching for a MX850 on CraigsList for over a month, but haven't seen one show up locally. Canon has refurbished MP990's for ~$100 with free shipping which is tempting. Based on the nozzle count, seems like it would be relatively fast.

8-9ml ink capacity vs 13ml for the CLI-8, which is a negative. The refilling cost would be the same, but more interruptions to replace low/empty carts. I was thinking I could live with that, but keeping track of separate ink is close to a "show stopper".

Well, I'd have to actually get the MP990 plus carts plus probably resetter ... just to try it out. I'm reluctant to do that if someone on this forum can share their experience.

Interesting point.

I have just refilled 4 CL-221 carts for my daughter who has a MP560 Printer. You will need an appropriate CHIP RE-SETTER. My CLI-8 re-setter did not work with the CLI-220 carts.

I am using Image specialist inks, so results will not be exactly same as OCP inks. My daughter has not changed to the refilled carts yet I cannot comment on final results.

Have found that some IS vendor web sites give same image specialist inks for both cartridges, others give different reference numbers for the some of the cartridges. An interesting variation I intend to follow up with my vendor of choice.

As another poster mentioned you have nothing to lose except the cost of a chip re-setter.
