What is behind the policy by Canon US of selling the Pro 100 printer as cheap as chips.

Some say they can’t maintain this Ludacris policy and they will go broke if they don’t stop, or they have flipped their lids, or they are just simply rubbing the rest of the worlds nose in it.

But wait a minute, there has to be more to their sales policy than meets the eye, maybe it’s a real money spinner for them and us idiots can’t see the forest for the trees.

They first give away theses printers free if you take into account free shipping, but this cannot make sense or can it, now they are giving boxes of free paper with a few measly cartridges, and I reckon now it’s all starting to make common sense.

For every free printer sold/given away, how many of these printers will exclusively use OEM inks and how many will use 3rd party inks, that answer is a no brainer.

Think about it for just one second, for every 10,000 printers sold, approximately 100 of these printer will use 3rd party inks (Maybe) and the rest will most certainly stay with OEM.

That means 79,200 OEM cartridges are sold for just that 10,000 printers, but what if the real figure is 100,000 printers Plus, then the real profits starting rolling in on the very large cartridges sales, it’s the Gillette Razor thing all over again...

I reckon the market place is to fragmented in the EU to achieve anywhere near that level of sales penetration to make it worth the while of Canon EU.

Comments are very welcome for or against this successful adventure by Canon, but please refrain from kicking the cat out of frustration at not getting offered the chance to get your hands on such a great printer FREE...

Makes perfect sense to me.

As any investigative journalist will tell you. When things don't make sense follow the money. Doubly so if politicians are involved.

I would hazard a guess that Canon cannot offer the same discounts in the EU because the EU market place is more strictly managed/controlled and they probably have laws to prevent the deep discounts, or as some would term it "dumping", that Canon practices in the US. Not a criticism or judgement just saying different economic philosophy.

My first SLR was the AE-1.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_AE-1
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explor...assic-cameras-canon-ae-1-35mm-slr-film-camera

Is the Pro-100 destined to be the next AE-1 in the world of printers?
As stated in the last paragraph of the second link "It introduced millions of people to photography in the 1970s and it continues to be a gateway camera for students today"
The Pro-100 is introducing many to the realm of better photo printers and some of these users might be the printmasters of tomorrow. As their abilities progress, they will look forward to printers like the Pro-1 and Pro-1000.

A side question is just how much better should cameras get anyways. In reminiscing the AE-1, I had, the fastest film I used was ASA400. My old standard was ASA100 and ASA64. Somehow we managed.

Although the headline price is low, not everyone gets or uses the rebates, which probably saves Canon a bunch of money compared to just discounting the actual price.

One interesting thing I learned in an article is that worldwide, HP has the biggest market share followed by Canon, and then Epson in third. I wonder how market share would be broken down by region and how that might affect sales strategy.

I hope you kept those nice f/1.4 and 1.8 lenses ;) Things started going to pot when slow zooms became the norm.
I have some Tri-X 400 in my Canon 7 RF right now :D

all printer's manufacturing Co. get their profits from selling ink and not the printers.a barrel of ink (which is made of water and dissolved color pigments)is 1000 times expensive than crude oil. so they sell the printers on cost price or even less , but the first set of cartridges we buy is more expensive than the printer its self. in one year of printing how many $ we spend on cartridges which contain 3ml-5ml of ink ?, they become ink trader Co. and NOT printers trader. that is why they put a lot of obstacles (eg. firmware updates) to prevent people from using 3rd party inks. yesterday i saw this offer ( get canon printer for free on buying Lenovo cell phone 100$ and above). Is it strange?how much the cost of the cell phone and/ or the printer?
