When my computer comes out of sleep mode it tries to install pixma ip3000 printer driver again but fails. Then I get the "usb device attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it." When I try to use the printer it says the printer is offline and no matter what I do it won't come back on line unless I re-boot the computer. Everything is fine until it goes to sleep then it starts all over again. Dell Precision T3600, Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. Any help would be appreciated. - Thanks

Is this effect new - or since when ? Since installing something else - or changing the port the printer is connected to ? The problem is most likely with the settings how the USB port handles the temporary shutdown and recovery. I have seen various types of such problems with with the hibernate or sleep mode - devices vanishing, not connecting anymore, USB hubs shutting off etc.
You could find some information in the device manager, there is a section for USB connections at the end, whithin the properties tab there is access to a long list of interface properties including power settings - it's all very cryptic describing what that USB connection is doing in different situations , you cannot change very much . S0, S1, D0 ...etc are various possible energy states a system can get into, and the driver would do this or that as listed when transitioning from one state into the other.

You have a tab at the right side for some power settings, or you could display the power and energy settings as shown but not change them.

You may try to connect the printer to another USB port, or directly or via a hub, you may get different results.
You may reinstall the driver as well.

Thanks for the replies. Played around with different settings and tried all my USB ports. I have 7 USB2 and one USB3 port. Had the same results on all the USB2 ports but everything worked fine on the USB3 port. The problem is it is located on the front of my computer and is inconvenient to have the printer plugged in all the time. I guess I will just have to use hibernate instead of sleep. Thanks again for getting back to me.

I am having similar problems with network-connected printers printing from Google Chrome on Windows 10. I can print ton that printer for apps, but not from Google Chrome, which reports it has "been offline for more then a year".

Bulsh**t, I just printed to it 3 minutes ago!

oh well - the Google clock is running faster..... USB 3.0 and 2.0 are claimed to be upward/downward compatible except for the speed difference, but there are plenty hidden parameters you cannot get access to - device identification, power/current limits, timeouts, recovery from suspend states etc. I have an USB 3.0 stick which runs o.k. on one USB 3.0 port, but not on another computer on another USB 3-0 port, that tells me that the device could run faster .....and I have another USB 3.0 stick which shuts down and disappears after 30 min idle time on just one of several USB ports etc - it's just fun
