I recently changed the printhead in my L800 and when I put everything back together and turned it on the power light came on it start to run the printhead moved to right and makes a big clunking noise and then the ink and paper lights start blinking.

I thought maybe the printhead I put in was bad so I put the old printhead back in and it does the same thing. Everything was working fine (except poor print quality) before a replaced the print head.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

do you have a service manual available ? Are you using 3rd party inks ? Could it be something with the
coding band which runs across the print width and is passing a small sensor at the back of the carriage, this coding band is read to derive the exact position of the carriage. This sensor has its own small track of a flex cable which is connected somewhere in the carriage to the main flex cable or is part of it and splitted off, and this connection may be impeded by the printhead handling. And with a service manual there are possibly other causes to find for this effect.

As @Ink stained Fingers said, the timing strip (Coding band) it’s possible that you may have put it back incorrectly, it needs to pass through the back of the print head for proper alignment and head position...
