As I posted yesterday in the Canon forum my trusty old Canon MP610 (7-8 years old) gave up the ghost yesterday and my son's is also on its last legs. Folk there were enormously helpful in advising how to eek it out to print some vital travel docs my son needs for a 3 week trip round Europe.

Now I need to find a replacment quickly which has the following features:
- all in one (print, copy and scan)
- high quality photos (I'm a keen amateur photographer)
- good quality document printing

Not bothered about Wifi connection. Can't afford to have separate printers for docs and pics.

Any recommendations?

If @mercurist doesn’t print that often then an Epson maybe out of the question for him, because of their tendency to clog, and the Maxify is on special at Argos till the end of the month..

these Epson models are 6 color dye photo printers, I wouldn't expect too much a clogging issue with them, but the overall usage is clearly worth a question, as well whether the Maxify print quality would suffice - I'm not familiar with these models. Other Canon models with 5 or 6 colors may be suitable as well, with a recommendation by somebody else, if mercurius wants to stay with Canon. Another question would be whether there are plans to use refill inks or 3rd party cartridges to save on ink.

Thanks for this suggestion. I have a bit of a bias against Epson printers as I had a lot of trouble with one about 15 years ago, but of course technology may have moved on since then.

May be (see my comment above) that they haven't moved on that much then.

Would be interested to know what the Canon equivalent printer would be. I only use the manufacturer cartridges - again bitten by compatible inks that ruined one of my previous printers. Apologies I sound like a walking printer disaster zone!

If space is not an issue, you best bet is to get a SEPARATE dedicated scanner and separate photo printer. If you do document printing, a cheap laser printer would also be recommended.

The reason? If the printer fails on an all-in-one, you loose functionality of ALL the other parts (scan/copy/fax).

Unfortunately I don't have space for separates.

almost all colors are a mix of CMY inks, and gray is just one out of the millions overall, and gray is always mixed. That's not too bad, you don't see the individual colors but the composite, the problem with such grays becomes visible when gray tones are viewed under different light conditions - daylight or incandescent light or neon tubes etc - and specifically gray tones then appear to get a color cast . And it is this effect, and some more related to that , which are better under control with the use of a gray ink, all larger scale photo printers - Canon or Epson use one or two gray toned inks for this reason. This is valid for all color prints - monochrome prints are just a special case, and they get better as well with an additional gray ink-
